Why self-study? Also, books for Physics C mech/Calc BC?

I’m not sure why some people on here take 7 AP’s in school and then self-study 3 more. Is there any gain besides getting college credit in the end? I’m sure most of the people on here aren’t self-studying because they’re so eager to get college credit in ap enviro or psych.

Also, next year, my two toughest AP’s will be physics C mech and Calc BC, usually because math-related classes are harder for me, while social studies and english are easier. What books do you guys recommend, I’ve seen a lot of conflicting opinions. I really do not want the books that say AP Physics B & C or AB & BC (although for math it’s obvious that a combined one would help in BC, but I want more BC specific content). Thanks!

I think many people self study to look better to colleges. Also, it’s for personal enrichment

I’m doing to learn more/for the fun of it, and college credit can’t hurt

I also like the people in these classes  AP Science people rock! I like to build friendships with people who share similar interests/aspirations, and the people who take such challenging AP courses are usually all-around brilliant yet truly interesting to get to know.

thanks for the insight, but I doubt most people truly do it for personal enrichment. I am one of those kinds of people, so the idea of self-study interests me… I am taking 6 AP’s next year but am juggling with the idea of self-studying for human/geo. My school offers it and I like the teacher but I’d rather take euro.

^I would say go for it. Human Geo is actually really interesting

CS A: want to learn programming, and I’m interested in CS + no school class
Calc BC: math is what I do, and school wouldn’t let me accelerate
Eng Lang: improving my writing and rhetorical analysis skills + no school class
Physics C: interest + no class at school (self-studied B last year due to being bored and interested in physics)
Psych: interest + lack of schedule space + good chance of getting a bad teacher if I signed up for the school class

THERE IS A METHOD TO MY MADNESS

Also, AP Advantage + PR for Physics C. PR should do for Calc BC (though Be Prepared for the AP Calculus Exam and Peterson’s/Arco are what I have) as well. (There are zero books that are solely for Calc BC, since Calc AB material is a subset of BC material, unlike the Physics B/C relationship.)

Very true but those who do reap great benefits for personal enrichment since it challenges & motivates

Also one of the reasons is that otherwise, there is nothing good to take. I am taking BC because I would be bored in AB or CPE especially (although easy A’s would be guaranteed).
