@cafe9999 congrats on your D becoming a semi-finalist! If I understand the process correctly, you will be required to provide a CSS profile for the next stage. My D was a QB finalist but did not match (she was accepted ED into a QB partner). She is also a semi-finalist for Cooke, though under a different application flow as she is also a JKC young scholar. Best of luck in the next round!
95k does, but very few scholars have family incomes anywhere near that. The average for my cohort was somewhere around 30k per family â and many had 4 or 5 other siblings or other dependents, like grandparents that needed care. The vast majority of JKCF recipients receive the full Pell grant. This stat (average income) and others are available on their site.
No one is saying that the kids are chosen on financial need alone: there are a lot of needy kids, and a very limited number of scholarship spots. That alone is not enough. It is, of course, both merit and financial need & consideration of other difficult circumstances â but that doesnât change the fact that JKCF considers financial need and similar dire circumstances much more heavily than most major national scholarships, which are usually somewhat willing to take an upper middle class kid for a set of great achievements.
Coke is 100% merit and it says so on their site.
Additional source: I won both.
@readthetealeaves @milgymfam Thank you both so much. @milgymfam And congratulations to your daughter. That makes sense about submitting the Profile. We are certainly not expecting her to be selected in the final round. We are grateful for the semifinalist recognition, especially as a student with no hook other than being low income, and this combo probably wonât help with need aware schools.
There are families who may meet the JCKF financial requirement who are very involved in their studentsâ lives and peruse these forums. I am one of them. Also, my daughter is a JCK Young Scholar. Itâs such a fabulous opportunity.
