Why the Devil is Darmouth a College

<p>There are also historical reasons. Early in the 19th century the state of New Hampshire tried to take over Dartmouth and set up an entity called “Dartmouth University” in Hanover for the purpose of running the school. Dartmouth College fought this bogus Dartmouth University in court all the way to the US Supreme Court where it won, and where the winning case was famously argued before the court by Dartmouth alum Daniel Webster. </p>

<p>Because of this, even if the school somehow grew into a functional university the size of Ohio State, there will never be a “Dartmouth University.”</p>
