I don’t get it?

Basically an inferiority complex among CAS, SMG, COM, and the like. Honestly, I do not understand it either, but I am happy I do not have to worry about that next year at GW. But seriously, you can have just the same amount of friends across schools, but you have to essentially ‘prove’ yourself, as stupid as that sounds, that is what an alum of CGS stated.

It’s like people get off on this power trip, thinking they are soo much smarter or “higher up” than CGS students. Uhh, who’s going to graduate with the SAME thing everyone else is in 4 years? Thats right, CGS kids. Given that CGS is the 2nd biggest school at BU, you shouldnt worry about encountering too much fuss about it. It always comes up at least once during the year in the newspaper but sometimes, the arguments people have are simply absurd.

Boooo… I want to become involved in the newspaper. Lame.

Haha, yeah just last week their was a 3 pane comic strip that depicted people protesting. Then someone asks, what is going on, and the person next to him says, “oh, the CGS kids must have moved nap-time outside.” It was pretty bad but oh well, theres little anyone can do about it. Besides this, most of the CGS centered articles show up in the Daily Free Press (the student newspaper) as letters to the editor.

That is SO stupid. I really just don’t understand why people think less of CGS. One would think by the time that everyone reached college, all the stupid High School crap would have ended. If this is really how it is, I don’t know if I’d want to attend a college where all this childish crap occurs.

CGS is similar to what they have at NYU. Many feel that w/o these programs the schools would be more selective and therefore ranked higher.

I think it mostly stems from the fact that students in the other schools feel they have to work harder than students in CGS to receive the same degree. For instance, people in COM have to take COM101 as freshman, which is a pretty intense class, whereas people switching into COM from CGS don’t have to take it. I don’t really care that much, but I think that is where the animosity comes in.

CGS is college of general studies right?

My friend is in the BU UNI Program, all geniuses. I guess they can just as well look down on the rest of us. The CGS thing is overblown. Only a few people care. They seem to have so little to study, which makes me mad, but by Junior year they have to take all the hard upper classes so they have to be caught up by then. So I have no problem with that but I would if it was for all four years.

But see, it’s not like the CGS students can really help it. It’s not their fault that they weren’t accepted into another BU school the first time. If anything, the students at the other BU schools should be mad at BU, not the CGS students.

oh i dont care. i’m going to be an incoming CAS freshman. i think we’re all going to a pretty great school. so far, i love all buers!! :)

Yeah, like what everyone said before, I think they’re ****ed because it hurts BU’s selectivity rankings and the CGS kids don’t have to take some difficult required courses. But to repeat what was said above… people should be angry with BU, not the CGS students themselves. Yes, BU likes the money from CGS students, but I don’t think they put kids in there who they don’t think fit BU standards. I am a transfer from UW-Madison, but if I had applied as a freshman, I most certainly would have been accepted to CGS. There are the kids who BU thinks won’t ever live up to exactly what it wants, and then there are the kids that BU thinks just need a little more time to figure out what they want so that they can prove themselves. (I’m not meaning to stereotype CGS kids… but just to use myself as an example, I was barely in the top 25 percent of my HS class and my first semester of college I received mostly B’s in lower-level courses. However, now that I’ve found two majors I enjoy, I get mostly A’s in upper-level courses. Maybe I’m idealizing a bit, but I think BU recognizes that the CGS kids might just need a little time to figure things out.)

nicole, why did you transfer from UW-madison?

I felt like the kids at UW are very image-conscious, less worldly, and very close-minded. I think someone will either fall in love with BU and hate UW, or fall in love with UW and hate BU. Madison felt like high school whereas BU strikes me as more real-world-like.

read the review dated April 24, 2004… this guy hits it right on the nail for me

And, as can be assumed, I absolutely love BU. I feel like I’m getting a “real” college experience, and by that I don’t mean attending sporting events and beer drinking (even though I still do that every once in awhile). I mean I’ve met people from all over the world (Bolivia, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, and China… just to name a few in my close group of friends) and we somehow manage to discuss issues that would seem controversial in an open-minded and intriguing way. I’ve learned of all kinds of new music, new religions, and just different points of view on the world. UW made me self/image-conscious and changed me for the worst (I found myself often worried about my apperance). In Boston, everyone wears whatever they want, and looking ridiculous is beyond okay.
