“… The new strategy is an attempt to appeal to younger viewers, who are more accustomed to watching shows ad-free on online streaming services like Netflix Inc., and to advertisers concerned their messages are being ignored amid all the commercial clutter.” …
Watching football is almost unbearable. Thanks to commercials, a 60-minute game takes 3.5 hours.
"…By airing fewer ads, the theory goes, the remaining ones become more memorable, and thus more valuable to advertisers, letting programmers charge higher rates
“The customer can avoid a whole number of other ads, so we’ll charge a higher price,” Fox CEO James Murdoch said at a conference in September.
I think he is talking about ad prices and not cable even though according to the article there is less demand for ad space.
Round and round it goes. They convinced the world to pay for TV in the late 1970’s so they would have no commercials.
By 2015 there are 15 minutes of commercials an hour and the cost of getting cable is becoming prohibitive…
So I assume they are going to increase the price of cable stating that there are fewer commercials.
Classic.
None of it matters. As people run to streaming the giant that is Comcast is already starting to charge people by the amount they stream.
They will get their money from you one way or another.
I just think people are at their breaking point cost wise.
Verizon FIOs charges extra for a DVR box every month. With their regular cable box you cannot fast forward through commercials that are on demand. They are soooooo slick.
Romano…- you’re of a different generations than we parents. Just as we have different habits than our still living parents.
I don’t bother recording shows for later- most not worth it. Use TV as here and now entertainment, usually with a book to read at the same time. I wonder how many people record stuff they never see?
The Networks and the cable companies are strangling the Goose that lays golden eggs. The number of ads during your favorite show has become nearly unbearable. Netflix is mega-successful for a reason. Yes, I remember the Cable Company promotions of the late 1960s and early 1970s; ‘WE HAVE NO COMMERCIALS!’
@wis85 I don’t think it’s just the younger generation. We are definitely in the older group here and DVR most things we watch to avoid commercials. I don’t watch a lot of TV but can’t stand sitting through commercials. By recording things, that 1 hour program becomes a 40 minute show. The only thing I watch live is the news.
