Just as the name says, why should I (or any perspective) choose UCLA over, say, Berkeley? If current students/alumni list, lets say 5, reasons, I would greatly appreciate it. (Oh, and please don’t say stuff like, “It’s world-class.” Try to be specific.)

If I was being philosophical, there’d be only two possible responses: (1) Why not? or (2) Because (or to expand, as “it’s there”).

Being an alumni, there’s obviously a certain amount of nostalgia for me, but recalling how I felt as an undergrad,

The professors I had (for the most part) loved what they taught, and loved to teach – and I had (still do) a passion for learning. Perfect combination. As a result, I was never, ever bored.

My peers – what a great mix of students, a social study in itself. Some with the most amazing charisma, or natural intelligence, or well read – lots to challenge me, as well as loads for me to challenge.

Places to chill and ponder: there used to be a little area of grass and two trees (one tree is still there) right behind Royce Hall between Royce and the former English reading room. It was my place, under that tree, where I’d hang out, and read, or catch people passing by who’d stop and sit with me under the tree. Sometimes it was one on one, sometimes a group; sometimes we’d bring guitars and recorders or something to drum on and jam. Other times we’d have animated political discussions.

North campus facility – hanging around the fire pit trying to figure out what we were going to do to raise hell on a Saturday night. Usually involved some club on Sunset Strip.

Finding the covered bridge and other hidden gems they never tell you about.

Political and theatrical outdoor rallies/entertainment.

That’s six, so you can drop one if you’d like.

^ Not true. It’s all relativistic. What’s exciting for you might not be exciting for someone else and vice versa. since when was econ boring? Econ gives you tools to analyze and understand what’s happening around the world…great balance of quantitative and qualitative work too
