why UMICH essay?

Hi,

I am working on my why UMICH essay for rolling admission for LSA.
I know its a very good school and has a very well-rounded curriculum from looking at the websites, but I can’t find characteristics that are solely for UMICH.
Will I be looked down upon if I mention characteristics that are not only for UMICH but for other schools?
Also, if I write far less than 500 words (about 250), would they think I am not interested enough in the school?

Thanks

I’m not sure if this will help but I think you can write about characteristics now only for UMich. BUT make sure you include at least one characteristic solely unique to UMich. I think relating it to your intended major/school will make your essay even better. I wrote about their Computer Science program and their courses. They have a Smartphone Technology type of class and I included that because I haven’t seen that any other college. Do some research, if they see that you do research they’ll probably think you took the time to look up the school because you really want to go there.

And 250 might be on the short end. I know they say quality over quantity but it could show a lack of interest or that you were too busy on Ivy League applications that you did not get to the UMich one. Get someone to look over your essay and make sure the quality makes up for its brevity. However, the worst thing to do would probably be to write a lot of extraneous information just to fill up the space.

But then again, what do I know? Take this all with a grain of salt because I’m not an admissions counselor and I don’t know what they want. But this is what I did and what I think might work (:
