Why visit colleges?

Practical reasons besides seeing how college life is, or if its suited to your taste, or whatever. I’m content with going to UCD no matter how smelly or dirty it is, what’s the point of visiting it?

If you’re confident that you’ll be attending, there’s no reason to visit.

Just keep in mind that that’s where you’ll be attending for the next several years of your life.

I personally wouldn’t choose to go to a school that I had never been to.

I agree that simply visiting may not be helpful, but if you have the option of staying overnight it is something to consider. Spending some time living there may tell you something you didn’t expect.

i’m not allowed to apply unless i visit

@foshizzlenizzle: Well, college applications take a long time to do (even with all the copying and pasting). So if you can narrow down your list by visiting, then it wouldn’t hurt. And plus, you can use the information you got by visiting in your Why insert college name essay. You can write, “UCLA is the perfect match because the campus provides insert quality which allows me to insert something random. Also I fell in love with the research faculties in …etc” Obviously , this is probably the worst example for a Why insert college Essay ever, but you get the gist… ;)

I plan on taking a trip north towards the the end of my summer (Is late august/ early September a good time to visit colleges since they are in, yes?). That way I can get a feel of some of the colleges I have in mind and possibly even do some interviews to improve chances.

Then again there are so many virtual tours online. The schools in my state (they don’t consider interest) I wont visit. If I get in one of the state schools and have trouble selecting I would visit then.

So, I want to go to take a peek while showing interest, but If the ‘interest’ part was taken out… I would visit after I got accepted.

Visiting is important. Pictures and people telling you how awesome a school is invalid. You can hate a school so much once you see it.

My suggestion: If you are applying early decision, visit the school before you apply. For early action or regular decision, visit after you have been accepted.
