The University of Iowa first deferred me and said I was a candidate to be in their program for students with a low GPA and they just wanted me to send in my transcripts in a personal statement and that they will let me know by December 1st if I was accepted. I checked the status of my application and instead of saying deferred it says not accepted, Im guessing that I was rejected. I just dont understand. I had excellent recommendation letters, a great personal stateement that explained how I overcame being homeless and how I have improved myself. I know lazy people who dont care about their academics and they got in. All of my teachers thought I would get in. Im so devastated. I just dont understand. I think I was rejected.
I know that you’re disappointed that you weren’t accepted, but you were OOS and you’re low income. Likely, the school would not have been affordable anyway.

2.5 and a 20 ACT.

In another thread, you mention that you have some acceptances and that you’re writing essays in hopes that you’ll get accepted to UIUC in Dec.
When will you hear back from UIUC (you mentioned that the PS is due in Dec and you’re working on it)

Both [UIUC and DePaul] of them on December 15th.

Do you know if any of those schools would be affordable?
What results are you seeing on the NPCs?
Since you’re OOS, they must have factored in the fact you’re lower-income and couldn’t attend without a scholarship they didn’t have? Or… you could wait till the “decision” appears for real on Monday?
You should apply to colleges that may be affordable: UIC, UI Springfield, SIU Carbondale, SIU Edwardsville, plus of course DePaul, Roosevelt, Loyola, Elmhurst if you can commute. Run Net Price Calculators for Millikin, Cornell College, Augsburg, St Catherine’s, North Park, Blackburn, Northern Illinois, Rockford, Monmouth, Aurora, Ball State, Manchester, Gannon, Wartburg, Lynn, Novasoutheastern, LaGrange, The College of Idaho, U Dubuque, Dillard, Xavier, Centenary-Louisiana, UMaine Fort Kent, UMaine Machias, UMaine Farmington, Stevenson, Capital Ohio, Lesley Boston, Southwest Minnesota State, Mississippi U for Women, U Southern Mississippi, Lindenwood, Doane, University of New Mexico, Wells, SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Old Westbury, Lenoir Rhyne, Brevard, Elizabeth City University, NC A&T, NCCU.
After running the net price calculators, cross out the most expensive ones and apply to those that seem to be the most generous with aid. ALL of them would likely admit you if you do a decent job with essays. Cast a wide net - hopefully you’ll have several affordable choices, but that can’t be banked on.
Many have free applications and you should qualify for fee waivers.
Most of the Illinois public universities won’t accept you with an ACT of 20 and a GPA of 2.5. Your best bet is Chicago State and Northeastern Illinois.
You have no chance of acceptance at UIUC and DePaul or any other decent school.
You might be better off starting at community college.
Nova 10 I was accepted to Western Illinois University and Depaul and Roosevelt University.
U of Iowa also will be very expensive, as it’s OOS for you. Can you afford to go, even if you eventually are admitted?
Have you called the admissions office there to speak to someone about your application and your status as an applicant?
That’s not only unkind, it’s untrue.
@ChantaeG, See what happens on Monday. Being rejected outright is preferable to an acceptance to a school that you have no way of affording. Congrats on the schools you were accepted to; are any of those affordable?
Your stats explain why you didn’t get in – even if the school considered you for their low GPA program, that is certainly no guarantee of admission. You have a personally compelling story and should be congratulated for your accomplishments despite your hardships – but your backstory will not get you in to every school you apply to.
But it seems like there is already lot of great news – you already have some very nice acceptances. You would be wise to focus on where you were accepted rather than wondering why you didn’t get in to other schools. And stop comparing your acceptances/rejections to other peoples --it is a waste of time. Embrace the schools that want you and detach yourself from the ones’ that don’t. It is time to look ahead, not in the rear view mirror!
