According to WLBT, "Former Mississippi Commissioner of Public Safety and State Ethics Commission member Louisa Dixon and former U.S. Attorney Brad Pigott spoke at a news conference at the Obama campaign headquarters on North State Street in Jackson. Dixon said there is only one reason you don’t release your tax return, and that is because you don’t want somebody to know what’s in it: “Senator Obama is the exact opposite. He has released his tax returns, he has disclosed all of the earmarks he has asked for as a senator. He has refused to take contributions from PACs”

The Clinton campaign responded late today saying, “Since losing three contests on Tuesday night, Senator Obama has decided to unleash one negative attack after another in Mississippi, rather than address concerns about his readiness to be Commander in Chief and turn the economy around. We have already said Senator Clinton will be releasing her returns around tax time.” "

From AP report: “In the face of her unwillingness to release her tax returns, Hillary Clinton has made the false case in this campaign that she is more electable because she has been fully vetted,” the memo stated. “When it comes to her personal finances, Senator Clinton’s refusal to release her taxes returns denies the media and the American people the opportunity to even begin that process.”"

Why won’t she release the tax returns since “they” left the White House? Has nothing to do with Ken Starr. Remember fans, he’s “old news”…

I know they don’t have to, but I, too, have been curious about this. I’ve done some research on line to see what the speculation is, and have not had any luck finding specific suspicions/accusations.

However, if there’s nothing to hide, then why not release them (and why won’t John McCain). It’s such an easy thing to do to shut people up and end that discussion. They obviously feel the fallout from not releasing them is less than that if they do release them.

If anyone here has heard of any ‘rumors’ or speculation as to what might be in those tax returns, please direct me to a site where I can read about it, because I truly am in the dark on this one.

What’s it any of anyone’s business what Hillary, Obama or anyone makes? It’s none of our business. It’s none of anyone’s business that Bill can’t keep his privates in his pants too. So let’s not even go there. If we feel the need to examine the tax returns of our elected officials, or associate a certain candidate’s ability to be president because her husband can’t keep his privates in check, then privacy is truly dead.

This is an issue that shows some of the worst about Clinton. She said in the debate with Russert that she planned to release the tax returns but didn’t have time before the 3/4 elections. How ridiculous.

It’s not as if she has anything to hide, since she certainly will be filling in the government of the United States. But does she have something that she feels will hurt her primary chances if it becomes known? yes, she must.

well it is our business if the tax returns implicate some questionably transactions.

And I don’t understand why someone ‘doesn’t have time’ to release them. If they’re from the past, don’t you just kind of reach in a file drawer and hand them over. If the IRS came after her (or whoever) and asked for her returns, how do you think they’d respond to I “didn’t have time before the 3/4 elections”?

Well, she can say that considering the filing deadline is 4/15.

terwitt: I only mentioned it because people keep saying that. “Hillary can’t keep Bill’s thingie in his pants so she won’t make a good president.” I was like, that’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. And I’ve seen trailers of Jesus Camp (the movie).

My understanding from what I’ve read and heard is that she does intend to release them, but at tax time. I imagine this is so she can also release the most current one, which is probably not yet completed. I’m not sure that it’s as sinister as many are assuming. I’m curious what kinds of ‘questionable transactions’ might come to light in a tax return. What is it that those of you who are skeptical are looking for?

I thought the point was, people want to see it for more than 2007, and yes, I have no problem with not releasing 2007 returns until after 4/15. But she’s got to have previous years just sitting around somewhere. What if the IRS called tomorrow and wanted to see them next week? Any reasonable person has to have their tax returns easily available.

well, you need to do yourself a favor and watch the whole movie… it’s more disturbing than a trailer could ever imply. I think the majority of Americans have no idea this kind of movement is going on.

The assumption is because she hasn’t been forthcoming in releasing returns (prior to 2007) that there must be a reason she hasn’t (people vaguely speculate that there is something to hide, but who knows where from that speculation is derived - that’s why I was asking if anyone knew anything). Frankly, I hope there is nothing to cry about in them, but if there isn’t, why wouldn’t she release them several months ago, then release the 2007 after 4/15? It would put the whole issue to rest, and allow us to focus more on the issues and less on personal attacks moving forward.

From Fox News (just opinion from them) “Most likely, the return will show how much Bill has been making from his partnership with the Sheik of Dubai and his other business ventures. Should the spouse of a presidential candidate be in business with a foreign leader who needs favors from the U.S. government?”

^^^^^^
This is what I mean mkm56; I’m certainly not going to condemn her based on an ‘opinion’ from Fox News. If that’s the only thing out there, then this could backfire in Obama’s face (or anyone demanding she release them), if, when they’re released, they show nothing questionable.

I agree, they should just be released (for all politicians). Then there wouldn’t be all the speculation. For these people in politics, I would think they would have thought all along about how some business deal or whatever would look to the public and made decisions with that in mind.

I think hillary has to reconcile some of her finances before anything is released and she is trying to buy as much time as possible (and maybe get past the Pennsylvania primary first).

At a minimum she needs to make certain her candidate disclosure is consistent with her/their returns.

One thing, since 2001 she has not disclosed/declared matters as to the Clinton Family Foundation which has written off about 5 million dollars against taxable income.

There are also Bill’s (therefore THEIR) ties to Dubai and other foreign financial issues.

Just like Lucy Ricardo, Hillary has some ‘splainin’ to do.

The only balance sheet Im particularly interested in the the last 8 years vs the 8 prior to that. No wonder the Neo-Con’s are still trying to bash the Clintons after 8 years, the current Neo-Con administration has simply failed domestically and internationally. John McCain, Hillary, or Barrack will be a major “step up” from Bush2. The way I see it, America can’t lose on this election.

Speaking of balance sheets, another one in the win column for Obama.

This is very significant since as of yesterday, the polls showed the Wyoming race to be a dead heat. Today Obama won by a very significant margin.

So much for Hillary’s momentum. She will minimize the loss, most likely saying that Obama was expected to win. However, Bill, Hill, and Chelsea desperately campaigned there!

When I worked for the federal government (in a career mid-level supervisory position) I had to fill out financial reports that listed not only my sources of income but any income to my husband as well. I hardly had an influential position in government, but there were all sorts of ethics rules and the financial report was in an attempt to avoid not only a conflict of interest but the appearance of a conflict of interest. So I think that anyone who wishes to head our government should make public financial records and all sources of income, including income to spouses available now. It is our business.
