Why would anyone want to limit themselves?

Okay, so I was watching a movie and one of the characters said that it was okay to limit yourself, but never let anyone else do it.

I can’t help but wonder - why would anyone want to limit themselves? Because they are sick and know they can’t handle it? Because they are not confident enough? Because they feel like it’ll be a constraint? I don’t mean limit yourself in the clubs you join or anything, but I guess…in the sense that, for instance in the movie, the woman wanted to become a surgeon but ended up a nurse. If a person wants to go into nursing, that’s great, but she didn’t. She felt like she limited herself.

Why would anyone do that?

Maybe because they don’t have enough time? Pregnancy? Lack of money? etc.

People limit themselves because they are scared - scared of life and scared of succeeding.

Cono - But why let something like pregnancy or money limit you? I mean, you can work harder, do more, and find a way. If you have the motivation and the desire to do something, then…I mean, do people just find excuses to keep themselves down?

Moviefreak - That’s what I was thinking. But, my god…what’s with people and fear? It’s practically paralyzing three quarters of the world’s population. Why is fear so strong? Why can fear break a dream or passion?

While imagination and hope know no bounds, reality sets limits which, if we dare to transcend, will only end in misery.

jesus, could these responses be any more cliche?

zdub08 - then, what else would you say?

people should familiarize themselves with the saying of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” People limiting themselves because of fear - that’s stupid. That’s no way to live. Fear? Pshhh.

But aren’t you afraid moviefreak126? There has to be something that you want to do that you didn’t because you were afraid. Something as simple as asking someone out, but you didn’t because of fear. Or, hitting 120 in the car, but you didn’t because you were afraid.

Wikee - When you say that reality sets limit, how do you know that unless people push to make their imaginations a reality?

I guess this whole question is a bit cliche, but that doesn’t stop me from asking.

Everyone has limits. Is it dishonorable to know where they lie?

It’s not dishonorable. It’s good to know where they lie, it’s better to know why. Why are you afraid?

Optimization: I’m not afraid. I just don’t speed because I know it’s wrong and it will kill somebody. I’m not afraid of being rejected of a date because I know sooner or later it will happen.

Maybe I was afraid before I hit high school. But being in high school has taught me alot. It makes me think about life.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. - If you don’t take a risk, how will you ever know?

Good point. I don’t think it’s a matter of honor. I guess - well, does everyone have a place where they lie? I don’t think I believe that. I’m not even quite sure why. As odd as it might seem, I’ve always had this seven year old, Disneyland-obsessed idea that people lie, or belong, where their dreams are.

I’m sure that everybody has a place in life…some just take longer to figure out where that is. I don’t think that all people belong where their dreams are. Some get there the right way and some in the wrong. Some people don’t deserve to be there. I go back to my previous post…it’s better to know why they lie there…because then and there will you know if you or whoever deserve to be there.

Pop out a kid and say that again.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, people don’t use such situations to bring them down. Their priorities just change, and if it’s not as high-aiming as the dream they had before the rest of us criticize it as being lazy. I suppose some do use bad luck to keep themselves down, but there are still lazy or pessimistic people no matter where you go.

Plus, your whole scenario with the wannabe surgeon who ended up being a nurse - not everyone has what it takes to be a surgeon. Determination and wishful thinking aren’t the only factors, intelligence is a limit in itself. And sure, you can work really hard and so on, but in reality not everyone can do what they want.
