So basically I don’t know if my why Yale essay will harm my application. I visited one of my friends at Yale and stayed there for a while. During this time I really got the all Yale experience whether it is the dorm, the people, the dining hall , volunteering at Yale , the classes (got to few of them with my friend), the blue books night and shopping period and the flower lady
or an ice cream birthday cake from ashley’s.

So I know Yale , I know what I love about this place , what are are my feelings to everything there, and how a student feels at Yale. But I was wondering if the adcom might find it irritating or wrong that I stayed on campus and went to classes , while I am not a student.

What do you think?

idk about next year’s application, but this year’s did not have a why Yale essay, you could write about anything you want, they simply asked that you tell them something not already on the application

No, you are definitely allowed to visit campus! Write about it as much as you want.

re: guynameded: there was a “why Yale” section on the app–as I’m sure there always is–it just wasn’t a full essay. I believe it was 150 words of fewer.

I know I can visit the campus , but I kind of lived on campus for a week and a half. so maybe it is too much?

Don’t get carried away. Ask yourself: What I am looking for in a school? What makes Yale unique? Ultimately, the focus is should always be on academics.

thank you jamescchen

Mmm I love Ashley’s ice cream! <3
Okay, first of all, it’s totally fine that you stayed there; that’s even better than just visiting for their tour and info session alone! However, you need to consider the academic standpoint, since Yale is first of all a school.
You don’t have to write about “Why Yale” but if you are definitely planning to, make sure you are specific to why YOU personally would benefit and why YALE would benefit from your acceptance. Adcoms of course already know about the beautiful architacture and awesome facilities, etc. Be specific.

you should mention the flower lady…okay maybe not. just be honest and genuine i.e. speak in your own voice. think about why you really want to come to yale.

sgtpepper08 a folwer for 1$ is something unique:P but yes I got you and Demiitasse, I know why I want to go to Yale for every reason, and I will try to be specific. I just don’t know how Yale would benefit from me , but I will think about it

thank you both

Glad to help!
Also, I hope you experienced New Haven pizza, because I’m obsessed with going to Bar pizza lol. SO GOOD. If you haven’t yet, I hope you either visit again/GET INTO YALE and then you can eat amazing pizza…besides other…important things
Haha good luck!

I ate pizza at A1 and york side; however those guys at A1 make everything so…

nothing wrong with visiting classes. It just shows that you care about the school.
WELL, good luck putting all your feelings into a small paragraph.

Don’t forget the cupcake truck.

be geniune in giving your answer. if those are your reasons for liking yale, then by all means, write them. what adcoms most likely DON’T want to see is: I’m applying to Yale because its Yale and my mom wants to brag to all her friends when I get in. :-)

Be careful, if the essay is the same as last year’s it’s really short. You won’t be able ot say all you want to say, so start thinking about which things are important to convey and which can be dropped.

“Don’t get carried away. Ask yourself: What I am looking for in a school? What makes Yale unique? Ultimately, the focus is should always be on academics.”

That’s not true at all! Yale KNOWs they have great academics; so do about 15 other schools on par with them. They want to know why you want to go to YALE, versus Harvard, P-ton, etc. I wrote about how I thought the choice to be in a city versus a small, isolated town meant Yale students were especially unique.

And yeah, it’s only 150 words, so you don’t have much time. If you’re worried about it being weird that you “lived” on campus for so long, just don’t mention how long you were there.

I agree with SETitan, If Yale wanted to hear about academics, they could just go on US News and World report. Think of the question not as, Why do you I want to go to Yale rather than a community college or some random school, but of the TOP TEN or less schools in the nation, why did you pick Yale as the school you want to go to. Assuming academics are equal, endowment, the numbers game, assuming that is equal, what is it about the personality of the school that attracts you.

To SETitan and TheShiningSun, of course, good points!
I didn’t even think they’d be worth mentioning, most of us are dying to make a unique impression on Yale lol
Also, Yale is well aware of how beautiful their campus is and so on, so be really specific on how Yale will EXACTLY benefit you and how you can benefit them. For example, I will be bringing up how YCT would be the perfect continuation of my children’s theatre work in high school and how the brilliant opportunities of the art department will this and that and so on. Talk about how Yale fits into your exact academic/extracurricular interests (ex. “I have read all the research of Professor X on the effect of the color orange upon physical therapy and would be more than honored to study Psychology with him” and such lol)

Oh you were that guy! We didn’t know who you were, but we were always feeding you.

Is this essay supposed to be in the form of an anecdote/story or should we just straight-up answer the question?
