Why you would like your university at least an hour from home?

I’m not surprise, but interested in knowing why many students would prefer to have their university a distance from home. I myself have two top schools, one ( Michigan State University) is just 10 minutes from my house. The other ( University of Michigan- Ann Arbor) is about an hour. I must say that I may favor University of Michigan- Ann Arbor distanace a bit more. Due to the more feel of being in college, and just experiencing a new environment.

What’s your reason/ anything you would like to speak upon this topic?
Experience post are also welcome.

I wanna get away from where I live, the closest city is 2hr drive away (Portland), and I want to go to a large city (9+million in metropolitan area). NYC is my Mecca, but I can’t afford any of the school there

I would really like to go out of the state but I love Wesleyan University so much that I don’t care if it’s about thirty minutes from my house. That’s the only school that has that exception, though.

I love the area I’ve grown up in, and eventually I’d like to live there with a family of my own. However, the idea of spending my entire life in roughly the same place freaks me out like nobody’s business. The closest school I’m seriously considering is a 6 hour drive away :)

How about because I hate Alaska? Or that there aren’t any good schools in Alaska (unless I wanted to be a geologist)? Actually, even if I were looking at geology, Fairbanks is maybe 6 hours from Anchorage. We can’t even fly anywhere in 1 hour.

I think at least an hour or two. But not too far like most parents on CC suggested. Taking into account of airplane cost and travel headache, I think it’s better for the environment in general.

Interesting responses, more is welcome.

I guess thinking of living in one location for your entire life could be mind blowing for some students.

I really dislike where I live. Plus, I think I’ll be less on edge knowing my parents can’t decide to surprise me one weekend.

That was a issue I was looking for someone to bring up.

Say your at a local event ( or even just at your dorm) mainly host by the university. A family member decides to make a surprise appearance.

An hour isn’t nearly enough. I’d prefer a different country, but that’s too expensive. I’d prefer a different state, but that’s too expensive as well. It’s a shame there are so many good universities in Southern California.

The area I live in has been dying since the 1970s, and there are very few promising careers and opportunities for me after I graduate high school or college for that matter.

I go to college a half hour from home, and transferred from a school six hours away. I like being closer to home.

cleveland…yeah.

Interesting, any more?

Hawaiiboy15, I know what you mean, since I am in Youngstown.

Cause my parents go to all the University of Minnesota sporting events and I don’t think I’d want my parents at the same games I’m at every weekend.

Oh wow, well no one really in my family go to near by school sporting events. Though I see how that could be a issue for many students.

I know for me a lot of it is that there just aren’t any really good schools within an hour, and I imagine that’s true for plenty of other people.

Escape the schackles of life in the realm of parents.

Yeah, because it’s really easy for them to find you among 50,000 (football), 10,200 (hockey) and 15,000 (basketball) people…
