Question: how do Wi-Fi and Internet access work at Yale? I tried looking at the website online, but it’s very non-descriptive. Where is Wi-Fi available, and how fast is it? Do most students just use it, or do they bring their own router? What about Ethernet?

yes you will have wifi there, one for students and one public (obviously you’re only gonna use the student one). no need to bring a router

I don’t know of a single college that doesn’t provide free Wi-fi in dorm rooms, classrooms, libraries, quads etc. That’s why you’re not going to find mention of it on any college’s website – it’s like asking, “Do you have washing machines?”

And yes, Yale’s entire campus has free Wi-fi!

[Wifi and Networks | Yale ITS](http://its.yale.edu/services/wifi-and-networks)

In the early years when wifi s not available at all parts on campus, Yale ITS allowed the students to bring his own access point. But it prohibited the use of personal router. (A router would create its own subnetwork, run its own DHCP server, but an access point would not.)

This is true for any organization. (E.g., Companies). So the rule is you can set up and run your own router only at your home, and no other places. There is a term for a router that is used in an organization without authorization : rogue router.

Now there is no need for your own router at all as wifi is available everywhere on campus.
