Wierd Campus Visits

Yeah for those of you who have had one(prospective and college students) what was that thing you saw? or an experience you had that was abnormal to you. And haw did it affect you opinion of the school/college decision in general?

You need to tell us yours first?

I visited Colgate this past year and immediately crossed it off my application list. It was one of my top choices until I visited.

We got there, and the reception was hastily thrown together. They had chairs crammed together by a podium with barely any space between the rows. They had an assortment of Minute Maid juices, which would have been fine, but they were all warm.

The student speaker they had… wow. Of all the students they could ask to speak, they pick this hood rat girl from Brooklyn who is a junior and a English/Spanish double major, and STILL SPEAKS LIKE SHE IS FROM THE HOOD. Full of “ums, likes, uhs, wells” etc. Actual quote from her “Well, like, since I’m an English major, my like curriculum has been language… intense? intensive?.. I think it’s intensive, yeah, yeah.” Wait… you’re a junior at a prestigious LAC, and you don’t know that your curriculum was language INTENSIVE, not intense?

The speaker was what really put me off. That and they kept talking about this study abroad trip, and that campus event, nothing about the actual academics. Combine this with the fact that they simply threw the reception together, the whole thing came off as half-assed and superficial. It seems as though the types of students that go there are the college kids who aren’t there to learn anything, just to party and get a degree for a job.

I wasn’t able to visit The University of Iowa before I decided to attend but was surprised in how hilly the campus was. I’m not sure if this is abnormal or not, but in front of the Pentacrest that faces downtown I think there is a fence like structure (though I would say the pentacrest entirely is one of the most dramatic scenes that you would see on a college campus).
