WiFi hotspot device and service for design grad student

Happykid is changing apartments this summer, and the place she likes doesn’t have shared WiFi for the building. She is thinking that a hotspot might make the best sense.

She doesn’t play online games, but she does listen to Netflix while working on projects or cooking.

How can she measure her internet usage so as to kmow how many GBs of service to buy each month?

If she gets a dedicated device rather than just tethering her phone, any suggestions?

Should we go with an additional line on the family phone plan, or does it make more sense to get a cheap plan just for the hotspot device?

what do you mean by not having shared wifi for the building? Couldn’t she get internet in her apartment?

DD tried to do that in one of her apartments but even going to Starbucks and Panera to use free wifi she was going over and it was expensive. It ended up cheaper to subscribe to internet with cable company.

@oldfort and @Singersmom07 - In previous rentals, either the landlord has provided WiFi access for an add-on fee (currently $30 a month), or the tenants have all pitched in for WiFi service and split the bill (came to less than $10 each). She can get individual service with a cable company, but the prices she’s been quoted are in the $70 range and could wipe out any savings from moving to a less expensive rental.
