WiFi mesh system

There are a TP and a Google set at Costco for $229, but reviewers mention that the companies stay connected to your network the entire time. Is there a mesh system that gives great coverage, but is not so nosy?

Seems like all the good ones are or will be acquired by bigger companies. I tried a few other mesh systems before but none worked as well as the eero pro that I finally kept. Alas, it was recently acquired by Amazon which probably knows more about me than most people since I buy through Amazon weekly and use Alexa in my kitchen.

No, unfortunately. We all will be assimilated.

We just use an old fashioned Nighthawk range extender - we already have it, and we are too cheap to trash things that still work OK.

I have one room that is like a black hole in terms of service, it just doesn’t get good service even with one of those plug in the wall range extenders & was hoping mesh would be the answer, but am leery of all the comments about joining the Borg

We live in a good size condo where the wifi signal was just awful, due to a 3-foot-thick reinforced concrete wall separating sections of it. 3 strategically placed Google pods solved the problem very well indeed. I’m mostly resigned to giving up on my privacy, especially vis a vis Google.

RCN is my provider. They gave me Eero mesh to extend my wifi. My apartment is rather long and it works very well.

We just installed the Google Mesh System. I had/have the same concerns about privacy, but at least believed their online description of what is stored and what is not. I really don’t care if they know how many devices, or even how often I use a device, as long as they do not keep an account of actual sites visited. They should have no need for that. Their terms of use at least describe it that way.

Even with a mesh system, however, we have issues. Our house is not that large, but of 1950’s vintage , and very solidly built. The main router was placed (without any discussion by ISP) on the lowest level surrounded by concrete walls. Even with the mesh, it would not send to our family area, approx. 30’ away. It’s too complicated to relocate to a more central position without major issues.

So, we currently have a Cat cable running exposed to a more central location. And it still sometimes drops the signal to our TV. It has been a frustrating experience for us.

So online power line extenders work well BTW.

Anyway, we also have a nighthawk with a few extenders. No matter which flavor of system location is key. I had a room (our home theater), that is a room within a room design. Had an extender but was doing OK. One bright dude told me to put it on the ceiling which I do have a location for it and bam! Works great…

We installed Orbi mesh (w/ 2 satellites) early in the pandemic – 2 WFH adults and 2 school from home kids. It improved our wifi TREMENDOUSLY.

Our home is about 3000 sq ft, and the router where the service comes in is at the edge of the house. We had regular plug in extenders, but they really didn’t help. My techie son explained it was b/c it somehow dilutes the signal. Mesh also improved our streaming services on the TV!

Wish we’d done it sooner!

Ours main router is, at least, on the top floor, but there is one room, and it’s not that far away, maybe 30’, that does not get good service, it happens to be my husband’s new office room, so it’s frustrating. there is a bathroom between the room and the router, so extra walls, I guess. I am thinking a Costco purchase as it would be easiest to return when it does not work

Our house has 3200+sq ft on one level with plaster walls and brick fireplaces. My modem is in the furthest outside wall so I had very poor reception on the other side of house even via extenders. I tried Asus mesh, google mesh and finally Eero Pro gave me the best reception. I even get great reception in the furthest bathroom away from the modem. It is the most expensive option but with Black Friday deals, it will be on sale. I am using 3 Eero Pros and one beacon and all rooms are covered.

Privacy concerns aside, from a functionality standpoint our eero system works great, providing coverage over three floors and roughly 5,000 sq ft with one base and three beacons.

We have our main router upstairs in the master bedroom. Wifi didn’t work in the sunroom or in the basement, was poor in the family room. Got a mesh network (deco) last year with three units - one on each floor and wifi has been great since. Worked out really well, especially since all of us are working from home now. H has his office down in the basement and will sometimes use the sunroom, while I have my office upstairs.

OK…all you guys are making me want to look into this…Hope Black Friday has some good deals. Will have to look tonight…which system of theirs do you have?

Wifi signals transmit better vertically than horizontally in a house, that is why my house that has a larger footprint all on a single level requires more mesh system units.
