will a B+ kill you?

I received a B+ in my junior year of IB HL math for the first semester. This was partially because it was a new teacher, and I wasn’t really used to Calculus.

However, second semester I received an A with no trouble. Does this affect my chances for RD, regarding how they look at my grades? As far as my other IB courses, I received As – my GPA was unaffected by the B+ first semester (still a cumulative ~3.9).

I am not majoring in math, or any field near it, but I’m kind of worried that they’d look down upon this B+.

I know I sound too cautious, but this was my first B and I know UC cares a lot about grades.

Thanks for any input.

No… the chances of one B+, by itself, “killing” your application are nearly nonexistent.

The admissions office certainly cares about grades, but they don’t expect anybody to be perfect. If they did, I’d have to pack my bags and get out of this place immediately. I’m far from a perfect student.

Remember also that grades don’t mean all that much without the context of your high school and courseload. How hard is it to get straight A’s at your school? If it’s hard, the admissions office probably knows that (indications like class rank, past applicants from your school, etc.) and that will be taken into account, as not all A’s are created equal.

Also, the admissions office will look at who you are as a person, what you have to say about yourself, what you do for fun, etc. They probably try to get as best a sense of who you are as they can.

Getting a B+ is no big deal. My child, who is now a second year student, got deferred EA a couple of years ago. Then she got the worst grades of her high school years ( Mostly B’s because she was taking heavy duty physics and calculus classes ) Anyway, she still got in regular decision.

Yes…you won’t get in. Withdraw your application…you’re not worth the admissions officers’ time. I mean, seriously, how in God’s name did you get a B+ in Calculus??? My 4 year old dog aced Calculus. You’re just a failure at everything–including life. Just go crawl in a hole somewhere and ponder your meaningless existence.

Haha. Good first post. I sense the sarcasm in your title.

I still consider a B+ bad :expressionless: but that will always be my standards.

On another note, thanks for your replies, everyone.

Getting a B+ in highschool isn’t so bad … that way college won’t be quite so much of a shock!

Best wishes during the long wait until spring!
