Will a D on my paper affect my final grade?

I just got a D on my English paper. My professor told me to make corrections on the paper for a better grade and hand it in on the last day of class. Will I fail the class because I got a D on the paper? I handed the paper in on time, put a lot of effort in the paper and I don’t understand why I got a D. If I correct the paper and hand it in on the last day of class, will I have a higher chance of passing?

You cannot “fail” because of a D if all of your other grades are higher than a D. Ask your professor for advice on how to improve and put a lot of effort into revising accordingly.

It depends on how the grade of the paper is weighted into to your overall grade. If it’s 50% of your final score, then there’s a chance you won’t do so well. If it’s only a portion of your grade and you made all A’s on past papers or assignments, then you should make at least a passing score. If you turn in a final paper with significant improvements, you should also do better.

That really depends on how the grade is weighted, as others have pointed out. It’s obviously going to affect it somehow. If the paper counts as 80% of your total grade, then it’ll be a huge effect. If it counts as 10% of your overall grade, then it won’t be quite so drastic.

Of course, getting a D on this paper will affect your grade. All of your grades on assignments will affect your grade. And of course, if you correct your paper, then you will get a higher grade, provided that was what your professor actually said.

Take a look at the syllabus to see how much of your grade this paper was worth. If you don’t understand the syllabus or it is not listed there, then discuss with your professor.

Do all of the corrections on your paper, and if you still don’t understand why you got a D, then discuss it with your professor again. If you don’t understand why you did so poorly now, then you won’t do any better next time. See if your school has a writing center, and go there for help. Handing a paper in on time and working really hard on it means nothing if you’re paper is not good. Try to figure out why you got the grade that you got, so that it doesn’t happen again.

It will absolutely affect your grade. Try hard on the corrections and ask why you got a D.
