My mom’s cousin is on the board of trustees and is the former chair of the board at a college. He’s donated a lot of money and created a deanship and has a room named after him in the campus center at said college. This college happens to be one I’d like to attend very much. It’s not legacy because he’s not my parent. My cousin (she’s very close to me and is like an older sister) also graduated from the same college in 2007. I’d rather not say which college for privacy reasons. Would this help me in any way or should I not mention it? I’ve heard that sometimes mentioning (sort of) distant relatives attending colleges can actually hurt your application rather than help it.

Mention to your uncle that you’re applying, and let it go at that.
