Just wondering. I decided to stop obsessing and send the app in, so it’s done either way. I cut it down from about 900, but if I had any cut any more out, it wouldn’t be nearly as good. So would they prefer a blah essay that fit into the word limit or an 840 word interesting, fresh, revealing essay?

Don’t worry- if you think it was good, then you did the best you could. 60 words is not going to make the difference if you get in or not. Good luck.

my question was poorly worded. They say “approximately 500-700” and my essay was 840 after revisions to trim it down

Sorry- I misread. But I still would say 140 extra words won’t break it.

Take a look at some of the other essay threads to get some hints on how to cut down your essay. While it won’t kill your application, remember that these reviewers have to read many application each day. If you can say what you want to say in fewer words, they will get a little less annoyed about reading a long essay.

I’d say try to shorten it, maybe to 750? If it is at 840 and you are adamant on keeping it, make sure that each word elaborates on your point in a meaningful, captivating way. If it’s moving, no one will complain.

OP already sent it.

Mine is sixteen words over. Is that alright?

That’s perfect, don’t worry.

I’m still going to try to shorten mine. You should too. If you don’t follow directions, it doesn’t look good.
