Will an alumni interview hurt?

I don’t think I will say anything damaging during the interview but will lukewarm notes from the interviewer slightly hurt admission chances?

Which college are you applying to? Alumni interviews are only available for certain colleges. As long as you don’t say or do anything that raises a red flag, you should be fine.

CAS

Alumni interviews aren’t offered for CAS.

A friend of mine has been an alumni interviewer for many years. Cornell tells my friend that the interviews are an opportunity to answer questions. They have zero impact on the odds of admission.

The main purpose of the alumni interview is to answer your questions about Cornell. Except in unusual situations (i.e., if something comes up that is material and may not be reflected in the application, it should make little or no difference.

Alumni interview for CAS is just informational. It has no bearing on your application. At least, that’s according to the alumna who interviewed my daughter last application cycle.

"I don’t think I will say anything damaging during the interview but will lukewarm notes from the interviewer slightly hurt admission chances? "

Interviewers are asked to write notes comparing you within the context of the highly competitive applicant pool. The BULK of write ups should lie in the center of a bell curve hovering around “average”. A lukewarm write up is normal. A bad one or an extremely good one should be very rare. And this is how it SHOULD be.

Plus, the interview is rightfully the slimmest portion of anyone’s application – they aren’t even required.

As long as you don’t plan on intentionally insulting or pouring your coffee on your interviewer, you should do fine.

For many schools, the most important thing about the interview is doing it. Failing to have enough interest to have the interview can be a negative.
