I’m a junior who really wants to go to Duke for Econ and PolSci. This summer I will be traveling to the UK and I’ll have an internship with a prominent politician in Parliament (don’t want to name names but he’s the head of a prominent political party). I have a 33 ACT but my grades are slightly below Dukes average, but discounting freshman year they are about Dukes average. I’m involved in some things at school such as sports and two clubs, one of which I founded and am Pres.

But my question is will a unique internship make me stand out a bit in Dukes eyes, especially if I want to major in PolSci?

It depends on what you do with the experience. If you can craft a story out of it centered around how that internship has shaped who you are, or transformed you, or motivated you, or even taught you valuable lessons then it’s a big plus. It’ll show that you can find opportunities for yourself and grow and mature from them. Also, getting a good recommendation letter from that politician (if you can) would be a great boost for your application.

Alright thanks, I think I will be able to write something good and interesting about the experience. And maybe if I like the guy I’ll see if he could write the personal statement piece that Duke says is optional.
