I want to take AP seminar but I’m afraid they don’t see it as an English credit.
What year are you? College Board categorizes AP Seminar as a sophomore level English course.
I will be a junior
We were told it would be considered an elective and was not a substitute for English classes.
I see but to take it I must replace normal English
If it meets your high school graduation requirements for English, that’s fine. I guess the issue is what types of schools are you planning to apply to next year. If you are looking at highly competitive colleges, you should be taking AP Lit or Lang as a junior if it is offered.
Whether AP seminar counts as an English course likely depends on the college.
What English classes have you taken so far and what are you planning to take senior year?
Mine took seminar and research, 3 years of HS English and one year of dual enrollment English.
It’s not a sub. But if you look to use the credits in college, it was considered duplicative to other AP credits, maybe English. So no help there.
The kids that take Seminar and Research who are into it - LOVE IT.
It’s great for confidence and building research skills.
I don’t believe it will count as HS English by most colleges. And for graduation purposes only your school can tell you if it will.
So check with your counselor and the colleges of interest.
But for colleges that want four years of HS English, I would not use as a substitute, even if they say it’s ok. To me, it’s too risky in the overall scheme of things. It’s still too new a set of classes and their evaluation of it might not yet be set in concrete.
I’d take it as a pure elective.
Good luck.
Just normal english and ap research senior year or maybe ap lit
I dont have the option to take it as an elective and as an English course
No. I’m Saying take English. And then Seminar as an elective. They are two courses.
But when you get to college - if you have an AP credit for English and for Seminar - they might give credit for the same class so that is where they are duplicative.
But in HS Seminar is not English - at least at ours. And I don’t think colleges would see it that way even if your hs allowed.
So take English.
If you have room and want it, then take Seminar too. But English takes priority.
At your school, is the choice for Jr year AP Seminar OR regular English?
If so, all you’d have to do is specify this on CommonApp in “additional information”/your GC would indicate this in their report.
If you can only take it as an English course and it’s the most advanced option offered AND you’re interested, colleges would typically “count” it the way your HS counts it since they do not penalize students for lack of offerings at their HS. You may want to check with your 3 most selective public instate universities.
(Specify your school offers either AP Seminar or regular English for Jr Year and you could take Aqp Seminar but worry they wouldn’t count it as English.)
For what it is worth, if you are in California, note that California publics consider AP seminar to be an English course, but consider AP research to be a college prep elective (i.e. not an English course). Of course, other colleges and universities may vary. In addition, subject credit for AP scores may differ compared to AP English language and AP English literature.

My D24 took AP Seminar as a Senior (it was the first year her school offered it) at the same time as AP English Lit. At her college, she did receive credit for Seminar, but it was a Philosophy credit - 3 hours.
