The title says it all…

Why would it hurt you?

Well if you are referring to being a urm, then I would tell you this… It depends on what part of egypt you originated from as well as whether you personally identify yourself as an african-american (or are you conviently becoming a minority come application time). Best of luck

are you from southern egypt?

my family is from southern egypt/northern sudan and i would identify myself as a black/african american

Egyptians are Middle Eastern, and hence white.

However, if I were you I would check African-American. If they were to object later, you can say “dude, get a map, and learn some geography. Egypt is in Africa, and hence I am an African-American.”

They cannot possibly say that you lied or anything. Egypt IS definitely in Africa.

Egypt is not Middle eastern!

um…I am pretty sure it is.

try googling “map middle east”

I am Pakistani-American, so I kinda know the boundaries of Middle East.

For some reason people often think I am (and Pakistan is) Middle Eastern.

However, here is another valuable geography lesson. Pakistan is NOT in Middle East, and Pakistanis are NOT Arab (and they don’t speak Arabic either).

I guess I will put check the box “African American” then.

Egyptians of Middle Eastern descent would be classified as Caucasian (White) along with almost all the other Arabs. However, being from Southern Egypt you may well be more African. Yet, from my understanding isn’t Southern Egypt still mostly Arabic in culture and people. Whereas Sudan is the country that has the Arabic north and the African south?

NONE of the Egypt is non-Arabic or “black”.

However, it is in the continent of Africa. While not “black”, he is “African”.

Did that make any sense?

well my friend is egyptian, and he looks just like an middle eastern and is muslim etc etc. when i think egyptian, i think middle eastern.

I think you can tell by looking in the mirror if you are african american or middle eastern

Once again an appalling lack of knowledge and perspective of other nations and cultures reveals itself.

Clearly, Egypt is an ancient society, to which peoples from many lands come and gone for centuries. And it has long been a busy port for trade and exchange of culture (before Christ), therefore it is off the mark to exclusively distinguish them as “caucasian.” Are Bedoins caucasians? Are Nubians Egyptians? Egyptians didn’t even embrace “Arab” culture until they were conquered a millenia ago by the Almoravids from the Arabian pennisula.

Americans have a longstanding awkwardness and at times a demeaning casualness when it comes to culture and nationality, the I hope we will overcome as the world embraces globalization.

And for the record, officially and more correctly, the region in question is called ‘southwest Asia.’ But I don’t expect to see that designation often in the media or school textbooks.

Note that middle easterners are not just white. We are of all races, ranging from a nice light tan to a beautiful dark ebony
ALLAH AKBAR! hahahah

idk how da hell u guys prolly got a 5 on AP world history or w.e. look on the map egypt is in african nd borders w/ middle east so depressing! no wonder they say smart people have no common sense ■■■■■.

Egyptian would definitely not classify as African American in my book but I don’t know. I believe there’s someone of Egyptian descent in my res coll so I’ll ask her if I see her.

How in the WORLD are egyptians white? Just check african american!

I love Egyptian “garlic bread”…its like a garlic paste on like a chip toast! MMMM.
