Will Bowdoin Choose Me? (Grade 12, Int'l Student)

Here’s my stats for context:

I’m a Filipino Grade 12 student currently studying in the ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management) strand. I’m expected to graduate in 2027.

Academic Background
My latest reported academic average is around 94/100.
My high-school education has involved several transitions:I studied at one High School where I completed Grade 10. I later transferred to another school which was around 33 km from home. Because of the distance, I had to stay away from home/rent a place while studying there. I eventually transferred to my current High School, partly because I wanted to pursue the ABM strand and because it was closer and more financially manageable than my previous arrangement.

Geographic and Transportation Context
I live in a secluded, mountainous/rural area where transportation is limited. Only a small number of jeepneys operate in the area, so commuting to and from school requires careful planning and sometimes a lot of waiting. On school days, I can leave home as early as 6:30 AM to get to school. Getting home can be unpredictable because there are only a few available jeepneys. There have been times when I was left behind by the last jeepney and had to wait for my father to pick me up. On one occasion, I waited for approximately two hours before he could come. My location and limited transportation options affect how much time and energy I have available for academics, extracurricular activities, and application preparation.

Family and Socioeconomic Background
My family has a lower-income, rural background. Our main livelihood is rice farming and livestock farming. I have also helped with farming-related work and have firsthand experience with the uncertainty and physical demands of agricultural livelihoods.

I expect to qualify as a first-generation college student under universities that use that definition.

Leadership and Extracurricular Activities
I currently hold several leadership positions:
CAG Club President
Homeroom Vice President
Barkada Kontra Bisyo Auditor
Previously, I served as:
SSLG Secretary
SSLG Grade 9 Representative
Math Club Treasurer

I also participated in LiNKS 2026, a junior officials program, where I was assigned as a Junior 1st District Board Member. This gave me exposure to provincial government and legislative-style discussions and allowed me to interact with local political officials.

I have also been involved in academic and community activities, including tutoring younger children and participating in school-based work and leadership.

Work and Practical Experience
I have also had experience connected to local government through SPES work at the Municipal LGU Accounting and Treasury Office.

Bowdoin’s recent acceptance rate for international applicants was 1.26%. This can be an impediment for all international students. If you would like to say, will you be applying test optional? What are your academic interests?

Q: Why Bowdoin College specifically? Are you interested in exploring other colleges similar to Bowdoin?

FYI, I am not sure that US colleges see this as a hook for internationals.

All anyone can say is apply and give it your all but the odds are not in your favor. Much will depend on things that cannot or should not be shared on a public forum such as essays and LORs.

As I tell everyone, it is important to develop an application list that includes reach, match, and safety schools (including options in your home country) that appear affordable and that you would be happy to attend.

Yes, Bowdoin is an “interesting” case. They are need blind for Internationals, and yet they do not have the most generous overall budget for International aid. So to protect their budget, they are just a very, very hard admit for Internationals in general.

I actually think this makes Bowdoin a somewhat suspect list choice for full pay Internationals, who are basically getting caught up in this policy as a side effect.

For high need Internationals–well, there are certainly plenty of worse places to apply, but Bowdoin is not likely going to be the best bet on most lists.

It appears the OP will need significant/full aid from the original post.

OP – keep in mind that even if you are accepted with full aid, your family may need to pay for expenses such as transportation, health insurance, books, spending money, etc. Your ability to work as an international student will be limited and costs may run thousands of US dollars annually. Please carefully check the details of any aid package you may get from any US college to be sure it is affordable.

You also should plan on returning to your home country after college graduation.

I believe @NiceUnparticularMan understood that.

I agree with another answer that the acceptance rate at Bowdoin is quite low in general, and even lower for international students. Bowdoin does meet full financial need for international students and does not consider your need when deciding whether to admit you, both of which are plusses in your case. It is also a very good small college.

I am quite familiar with the area around Bowdoin and we toured it twice when one daughter was looking at colleges and universities. If you have questions about the area then please feel free to ask. Personally I quite like Brunswick, Maine. Of course this is in Maine and so there will be real winters, but I have met students from warm climates (mostly India) who got used to colder places that Brunswick with no apparent problems.

I don’t mind it being made explicit, but I was just sort of wandering over into full pay briefly to underscore a point about Bowdoin’s fundamental policy for International admissions–instead of specifically being harder only for high need Internationals, they are just harder for ALL Internationals, which then includes high need Internationals too.

Note that Bowdoin does not offer any of these majors. The closest thing in the liberal arts world is Economics. This is by design - encouraging students to take a variety of humanities, social sciences, arts, language, etc. courses instead of a preprofessional/business focused program. Is that what you really want? Can you demonstrate a great fit between your background and Bowdoin?

No. You need to expand your list of schools.

Studying ABM can be a negative for a super selective LAC. Business is a pre-professional curriculum; ultra-selective LACs admit students who exhibit intellectual curiosity.

Yes, I will be applying test optional since I cant afford to pay for the test. I’m planning to pursue economics and politics.

I actually have other schools in mind. I’m actually applying ED1 to Bowdoin. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Ive really been passionate in government related things since I was in elementary. I’ve seen how our community is often overlooked just because of the fact that our municipality has lowest population across the northern luzon. I chose ABM because it was the practical choice for me but I did loved learning about business and such other thing related to it.

I love their sustainability efforts. I have watch this yt video about their sustainability program that give freshman or other students the things that the graduated students left behind or gave. Its effective since it will also help lower income students free stuffs. I am also moved by their “the common good”. I feel like its the right place for me because I am to help my fellow people who are part of the underpriveledge. (Im sorry if there’s any errors. English is not my first language)

Why?

I did created list of those. I just cant decide whether to pursue Bowdoin or not.

I do know that surely I will have to spend money for that. And I have been rationalizing what could happen in the future and any expenses could be made. I don’t really plan on staying at the USA after finishing study there.
