Will colleges recognize this...?

Hi,

I am from a small town in southern Illinois. Most of the smart people in my town end up going to UIUC, but I want to go beyond that to a very selective school. My question is about extra curriculars. I notice that many people on here talk about AP courses, math and science competitions, and doing summer research projects. The thing is, our high school doesn’t offer AP courses, the only math and science related challenges or competions is scholar bowl and WYSE (worldwide youth in science and engineering through UIUC, which is a test based competition with regional, sectional, and state levels), and there are no kinds of research projects in an I don’t know how many hundred mile radius from here. Will the really selective colleges (like HYPSM) recognize that there really aren’t too many opportunities here, or am I just s.o.l.?

Thanks

Your high school councilor will HOPEFULLY send in a school report of ur HS… it’ll show HYSPM that your school doesnt offer APs.

besides admissions factors, taking and succeeding on AP tests is very valuable both in and outside of college. if you’re not a senior, i would recommend teaching yourself a subject or two outside of school… colleges will love you challenging yourself

they look at the APs your school offers. e.g., if your school only offers 3, and you’ve only taken 3, it looks good. if your school has 10, and you’ve only taken 3, it looks bad.

lol i’m screwed. i have 4 and my school offers like 15.
