Hey guys, I’m currently interested in going to the University of Florida or another college of similar prestige and rigour for mech engineering but I currently go to a community college called Polk State College. Niche ranked it at 1500 out of 1648 or something like that. And I was wondering if this would hurt my chances of getting into UF? Thank
My advice is to work the advising system. My daughter sees her academic advisor every term at the community college, and we drove to the state flagship school to meet with an academic advisor for her intended major as well.
We are very confident that her transcript will show what they want to see when it’s time to apply.
Would you be a transfer student? I don’t think it will hurt you at all as long as you meet the transfer admission requirements. Is there an adviser at Polk State who has seen people go to UF previously?
Also, you may want to get in touch with UF admissions. They could point you in the right direction too.
If you want to got to UF, Santa Fe is probably your best option. However, you can get to UF from any public college in Florida if your grades are high enough.
Thanks @SouthFloridaMom9 I can’t think of any advisor or students I know that have seen students go from my school to UF however a large amount of our transfers move on to USF/UCF I’m not quite sure how much more competitive UF is than those schools when it comes to transfers though
From Summer B 2015 to Summer A 2016, the college of engineering(COE) had 822 applications and admitted 302 students. However, it’s much harder to get into some majors, than others. Mechanical Engineering will be very competitive.

Santa Fe has a partnership with UF’s COE (Gator Engineering at Santa Fe), which generated 641 applications, with 221 offers and 75 accepted. The major’s supported by the partnership are Computer Engineering, Computer Sciences, Digital Arts and Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Sciences and Engineering and then Nuclear Engineering.
Good Luck!
Yeah, OP, what about going to Santa Fe? Is there any way that you could do that?
I don’t think Polk State would be any more or less desirable than any other CC in Florida, other than Santa Fe. As mentioned above, you want the best grades possible.
You have had good advice here ^^ from very knowledgeable folks. Wishing you luck and success on your journey!
