Will declaring a film major lower my chances???

So I want to go into film and tv production, I love acting (president of our thespian honor society) and i’ve dabbled in photography, design, and video editing. So I figured I’d tr to be a film actor and maybe a film maker. I am deciding this major on a whim, but it is a pretty passionate whim.
However, it is still on a whim, and I am pretty strong in STEM (i don’t like it though, i’m just good at it) so I was thinking biochem as a backup. and the goal is to be able to go out-of state. My top 2 schools are USC and UCLA, because they are good for both research and film
Should I

  1. apply for film as 1st major and biochem as 2nd major for both colleges
  2. apply for USC for film and UCLA for biochem (so I at least have a better chance of getting into UCLA)

Do you know that for UCLA out of state your cost will be $60k+/year? They give no aid for OSS.

UCLA will only look at your first choice, so if you apply to the film school as your first choice, you have no chance to attend that school as a biochem major.

USC states if you apply to the film school as your first choice and are not accepted there, they will roll your application over to another school within USC, but it is not clear how often that actually happens.

Applying to the USC and UCLA film schools is fine (although they are extremely selective), but if you are interested in keeping your STEM options open, I’d recommend applying to some additional schools as well.

Q: WAS I CONSIDERED FOR MY ALTERNATE MAJOR ALSO?

A: Within the College of Letters and Science, the major an applicant chooses is not a factor in the review process at the freshman level. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applicants each term, UCLA does not normally review applicants who applied to Arts, Music, Engineering, or Theater/Film/TV majors for their alternate choices.

cool this basically answers all my questions, I’ll look into 2nd majors at USC some more

Just to be clear UCLA does offer aid for out of state. I’m also an out of state film major who applied to both UCLA and USC. UCLA is actually cheaper for me to attend and will most likely be my 1st choice if I get accepted into both.

No college in the U.S would NEVER offer a student aid simply for being out of state. Less aid but not none at all.

Not to mention the countless film scholarships and opportunities for more aid.

I think the person above me is wrong. I have read thousands of times here on CC that the UCs don’t give aid to out of staters. California taxpayers are supposed to be the ones who benefit from aid.

@citymama9 Not necessarily. They have merit scholarships, and I know of at least one that would give the student a full ride (see Math example). For example, for Math majors: https://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/mums

And for all US citizens/permanent residents: http://www.financialaid.ucla.edu/Prospective-Student/Scholarships#495691561-ucla-achievement-scholarship

However, no need-based aid for out of state students, as far as I know, yeah.
