I’m a senior and my counselor refuses to let me drop my Teacher’s Aide period because that will “ruin my chances of going to a 4-year college” even though I’m taking 4 APs. I applied to several UCs, CSUs, and a couple privates. Will they seriously take into consideration that I’m dropping a non-academic class when deciding if they want to admit me? It’s not like I’m dropping any of my other classes.
What would you drop it in exchange for? TA is another word for a blank period in my kids school, it usually means they already have one study period and that is all they can have as free. Do you do anything in the class?
TA is basically free period but I am marked present/absent as if i were a real student and basically help the teacher grade work, organize stuff, etc. I’m trying to drop it so I don’t have to come to school at all during that time (it’s my first period). TA basically forces me to come to school and sit in a classroom when I don’t have to.
Yes, but what are the school rules? Here his would be called absent and 5 of those are a big problem. Can you call it a self study or a job placement period? Are you doing any self study, do you have a job?
If I drop my TA, then I have a free period. I literally do not have to show up to school because I’ll only have 5 classes. Having a TA does absolutely nothing except force me to be at school. I’m trying to get s job but the hours they want me conflicts with my existing schedule so that’s why I want to drop my TA. Basically going from six periods to five, but TA isn’t even registered as a legitimate class anyways. And I’m already taking 4 APs so it’s not like I’m slacking off
Maybe the issue is that this would inconvenience the teacher you signed up to help. Will the teacher then not have a TA?
Your counselor is either misinformed or lying. No college is going to give a rat’s ass if you drop your TA class.
It’s January-- almost February-- of Senior year. I’m assuming your apps and transcripts went out long ago.
That said, dropping anything so you can leave school earlier probably doesn’t look good. That job won’t show up on your transcript. And most places that hire high school kids are well aware of standard school hours and willing to accommodate them.
