Im gonna be a freshman at UCLA in about 20 days. WOO!! Anyways, here’s my question. I went to a HS known for having wealthy students and I felt very privileged to go there. However, doing the last four years, my parents have lost almost all of their money on a super bad divorce+high medical costs for my brother’s cancer treatments. Anyways, Im basically going into college with almost no money for fun activities (like dinners, movies, etc.). I didn’t really date in HS because girls didn’t understand why I couldn’t dump $100+ like it was nothing (I still went to the wealthy HS but moved to a more working class area). Anyways, I know college students aren’t usually super rich, but will my lack of money seriously hinder my dating abilities?

Shouldn’t be too much. If you really like the girl, I’m sure just hanging around her and being with her should do.

Maybe get a job on campus or something! :)

ucla women arent that great, and many come from affluent families…most ive met are incredibllly materialistic or have an unhealthy high amount of motivation. BUT there are of course exceptions

there are plenty of creative ways to go on dates that are not only cheap, but romantic. you just gotta be creative and think a little. like go to the park or walk by the beach. the only expensive thing would probably be food hahaha. but if you like the girl and she likes you, she’ll understand your financial problem. if not…she aint worth it

lol @jtanton, u mad?

If the girl you’re dating gets mad that you’re broke, then she isn’t worth it. That’s what people call a “gold digger.” For more information, check the following link:

this is easily one of the best forum posts i’ve ever seen. I’d give you rep if the option was available here hahaha.

Probably not as much as it would at other places. There are plenty of free things to do at UCLA.

Also, from the sound of it, you went from Rich to Middle Class, maybe Lower Middle Class. Which means you probably have enough money to entertain anyone who isn’t used to the super fine things in life.

I went from Middle Class to Poor. A lot worse.

lol…i been poor all my life…never went hungry or had rags to wear…but just get a job if you’re worried…ive been working for the last 4 years to support myself w/o my parents help and now ive saved up enough to quit my job and live off of that for my last 2 years at UCLA…plenty of job opportunities. rely on yourself. not your parents

just get creative =] you’ll be fine, surprisingly there are a lot of wealthier people here, but with such a large student body there are plenty of sweethearts that don’t care about you taking them out everywhere spending money(idea!:beach trip to santa monica, .25 each way). But just for yourself, as many posters have said: get a job on campus so you can pay for your books, and make things like wanting to go to Westwood for froyo not a big deal. Work study is still hiring- check the job bulletin for work study, and when you get on campus there will be a asucla job fair outside where you can apply and interview on the spot.

While the Westwood area is expensive, that doesn’t make the overall UCLA student body have a higher percentage of wealthy people. You’ll be fine OP, there’s plenty of girls that aren’t into just money
