Junior year next year I will be taking Ceramics. Would colleges like to see something else like another science or math class? Is this a deal breaker for Ivies?
This is going to depend on a lot of other factors, such as…
- Are you taking a lot of difficult classes? If so, then having an easy class to balance it out could keep you from getting overworked and thus boost your GPA.
- Are you going to complete all your core requirements if you take Ceramics? If so, then there shouldn't be a problem.
- Are you particularly passionate about ceramics? If so, then you should definitely take it, because it can make you more interesting and help you stand out.
All of the above reasons are, in my opinion, good reasons to take Ceramics next year. That being said, keep in mind that nothing will guarantee anyone a chance at Ivy League schools. They’re hard for everyone to get into.
I agree with above. You should not be sacrificing a genuine interest on the remote chance that you might get into the Ivies if you take another science class. Ivies don’t like academic drones. They prefer real’people with real interests.
Agree, if the rest of your schedule is rigorous, then taking one extra class in an area of interest is not an issue. If you are taking ceramics and dropping a core class it could be an issue. My D loved being part of her HS orchestra and stayed with it all 4 years as an elective and it did not seem to be an issue at all in terms of college admissions.
One class will not make or break you application. Keep in mind that top colleges take a holistic approach to admissions.
Some universities require a year of a visual or performing arts course, so if you have not taken any such course yet, definitely worth your time to take the Ceramics class.
It’s OK, man. I took a baking class this year for fun and my school is crazy competitive and academic. It’s not going to kill you to take a breather class if the rest of your schedule is hard as hell. As long as your schedule is mostly rigorous and shows a clear focus, you should be fine.
“Ivys” have many students who took ceramics and other art classes in HS.
