Will I be able to handle this school with an existing anxiety problem?

Pitt is my top choice and my parents (both Pitt alum) really want me to go. I would love to go especially because Pitt has an excellent program for what I want to do. I’m planning on having a double major in political science and international relations. There’s a huge problem though, I have some issues with anxiety. Sometimes dealing with the workload of school gets to be a bit much for me. Senior year has been pretty rough as far as my anxiety goes, I bit off more than I could chew with 4 college-level classes, a job, being a dancer, and being in band. I’ve been able to hold my grades together, but they have suffered a bit. I think not having all of the extracurricular activities next year will help so I can focus on school…but I’m really worried that Pitt is going to be difficult.

Also, I didn’t get very much money from Pitt and that worries me. Other schools in the Pittsburgh area (Slippery Rock and Point Park) gave me very generous scholarships, but their academic programs don’t even come close to Pitt. My parents are willing to pay for Pitt even though it is pricey, but I’m really scared that I won’t be able to handle it and I will waste their money.

Just to give you some insight into how I am as a student, I’ve taken all AP for the passed 2 years and I got an 1800 on the SATs. I’m not the valedictorian, but I am not stupid. I’m really not worried about “being smart enough” for Pitt. I’m worried about it being too much for me to handle. SRU and Point Park would just be easier, and although I’ve never been the kind of student to take an easy way out, I really don’t want a repeat of this year.

If anyone has any information about the counseling center on Pitt’s campus, that would be great. Thanks!

I would reach out to student counseling proactively to get support for how you can deal with your anxiety.

The academic resource center offers helpful workshops on time management and other tools for success.

I also love the stree free zone which offers yoga classes and other ways to destress.

I would start out with a manageable courseload. Focus on one major for now and see how that goes.

Do you live close enough to Pitt to be able to commute or come home on weekends, would that help?
