Will I be accepted with low SAT score?

Hey,
I’m a senior student at West Springfield high school, MA. I came to the U.S as a refugee in 2009 and have been attending school in the U.S since 8th grade. My English improved a lot since I came, but my sat doesn’t reflect that. I got the lowest on reading with 450 and writing with 520. My highest score was in Math with 560. My GPA is 3.66 unweighted with a high chance to become 3.7 since i have a 90 average for my 1st semester with ap classes. I have 3 AP classes this year including AP english and AP Bio. I have founded the first sceince club in our school and engaged in more than six community services. Do you think I will be accepted to Umass Amherst or BU?

I plan to study pre-med

@Mostapha‌ I know people who have got in with lower SAT scores so don’t worry. UMass doesn’t look at writing btw.

thank you a lot @fallenwinter‌ I have been really worried since I have applied. Your comment makes me feel better thank you very much for responding :slight_smile:

@Mostapha - I would be interested in your weighted GPA, considering it is above a 4.2 you should have a chance. Also they will likely recognize that you have been a refugee and perhaps that hurt your SAT. (BTW they only check M+R SAT) This being said, your SAT is still pretty low and I wouldn’t guess you will get accepted to you major. (assuming your are accepted) They might stick you in undecided, which isn’t a big complication. Lastly, you could switch in later, they have a program at the community colleges and the other, less competitive, UMass’s that if you have a certain GPA you can automatically switch into Amherst. So I guess what I’m trying to say is they you have options either way so please look on the bright side. (Again, given your situation, they may look the other way and accept you) :smile:

BTW- current accepted average SAT is 1220 (M+R) + a 3.78 weighted GPA. (May be a bit higher this year)

thanks for replying i just got my unweighted GPA and it was 3.71

I don’t think you have a chance at BU but you should get into umass

@laurrodes - I don’t think we can say he “should” get into UMass, the average Math SAT at UMass is 620 and the average reading is 600. Also, we don’t know his Weighted GPA / AP test scores. This all being said, 3.71 is a very solid “unweighted” GPA, and he came to the US speaking another language, and under extenuating circumstances, so they may let him pass with the low CR score on the SAT. I hope things work out, also I would hope he has a safety or two in line. Lastly, as Halcyon said, there is a community college program where you can transfer to one of the Umass’s at a later date and save quite a bit of $ doing so.

I had pretty much the exact same scores as him and i got in, I’m just basing it off experience @greenman57

Ya, assuming the weighted GPA comes out to a 4+ I would see how that would work. It gets more challenging each year though.

I have a great deal of respect for all you have been through and for your positive attitude and strong work ethic, however, West Springfield is a fairly weak public high school and the level of work at UMass Amherst is likely to be much more rigorous than what you have done so far. I would apply to Fitchberg or Westfield State College or a local community college as a back up. Getting used to doing college level work in a slightly less challenging environment might be useful, particularly if there is any concern about needing remedial classes. Do well at one of those schools for a year or two and transfer to UMass Amherst is pretty much automatic.

Thanks for everyone who have participated in this form, I got accepted to the pre-medical program. @fallenwinter‌ @Greenman57‌ @newengland2012‌ @laurrodes‌ @Halcyon77‌ Thanks to all of you, were all great supporters throughout the decision waiting process.

Congratulations, Mostapha!

@Mostapha‌ That’s great, congrats!! I think they probably took into account that English wasn’t your first language–and let’s not overlook that you have great community service and extracurriculars.

@keyboard18‌ @fallenwinter thanx guys !
