Will I be Deregistered from Chem 2?

Hey CC family! I had my Chem 1 final last Wednesday and even though the answer key has been up since then and the final grades have been posted today, I have been ****ting in my pants in nervousness and stressed out like crazy because I left the final not feeling so confident about how I did. For my university, if you get a 35 or below, no matter how well you did during the semester, you automatically fail the course. I don’t feel like I did that bad, but I did have to guess on a number of them, and you never know. I’ve gotten better, but I’ve been having some insomnia worrying about whether I got an F or D. I’ve been your typical perfectionist, honors student since elementary school, never get less than a B. This will probably be the first time I get below a B, and to be honest, I’ll take the friggin C as long as I can learn from my mistakes and move on to Chem 2 and kill it. So many things have been running through my mind: my family’s expectations of me, sitting in the same class learning the same material feeling like a failure and an embarrassment, the F on my transcript, not having the money to retake the class, the look of disappointment on my mom’s face, the disappointment in myself because I was doing okay during the semester, but the final might have changed everything. This may sound silly to some people, but I just want to enjoy these next two days (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) in peace without knowing my grade (I don’t want to ruin my Christmas lol), but I do plan on checking it this Thursday, after Christmas. Any advice is welcome, but from people who have failed a course, were you automatically deregistered from the next part of the sequence as soon as you got the F? I’m petrified of scrolling down to see my grade, so I at least want to have a heads up if Chem 2 is no longer on my schedule of 2013 classes. Thanks guys.

I can’t speak for your school or circumstances, but when my ex failed Bio I, he got to move onto Bio II as a “replacement credit.” However, Chemistry is a little different from Biology so I can’t say for sure if you’ll be as lucky.

Emailing the Chem II professor in the class you registered for may help clear things up more.

It’s like ripping off a bandaid.
But have you looked at the answer key to see if you can recognize your answers?

It doesn’t sound so much like Christmas Eve and Christmas will be spent in peace if you are so worried about your grade.

If you failed, you’re a good student and you can use the opportunity to learn the material to the T when you retake it.

I know with the system at my university, if you don’t meet the requirement you’re dropped from the course. Simply put. You didn’t meet the requirements.

An F in Chemistry I is not an acceptable grade for someone hoping to move into Chemistry II.

Don’t feel like a failure. You’re blowing this all up in your mind. Like really…calm down. Freak out for two hours if you need to and then move on. I have to retake a class. (One point away from making the perquisite grade). I cried and was delirious for an hour or so and then I got over it, made a proactive plan, and I am perfectly content with taking the course over.

You have a chance to get an A in the course, make your GPA better, and have a deeper understanding of the material.

At my school, failing a class means that you are dropped from the next class in the sequence, if you’re already registered for it. It may be different at your school.

Regardless, failing a class like chemistry means that you are not prepared for the next step in the sequence. It wouldn’t be a good idea to move on even if you could.

At my school, failing doesn’t automatically lead to withdrawal from the next class. Students have to do the withdrawals/schedule-changing themselves. Students have to stay on top of their grades themselves and adjust their schedules accordingly.

I have on occasion had students in class who did not pass a prerequisite. It causes issues, to be sure. If they refuse to budge (and some do not want to drop) then I have to contact my academic dean and registrar to have them check the student to prove s/he hasn’t passed the prereq and THEN they do the dropping if the student will not do it him/herself.

I hope you pass the class though! :)

It sounds to me like worrying about the class is a lot more stressful than just knowing what your grade is. If you just look at it, then at least you can formulate a game plan for what to do next (or you can be super excited if you passed).

At my school, prerequisites were usually strictly enforced, but it depends largely on the department (and sometimes the professor). If you do fail the class, then just ask what the policies are and if there is a way that you can petition. Sometimes, they will allow you to take the classes concurrently, so check to see if that’s an option. At my school, they would usually approve you to do things that you otherwise might not be allowed to do if you can prove that it will affect your graduation time, but that’ll depend on the school.

Quick update guys: I passed the class…with a B!! And I got on Dean’s List! The crazy part is…I just checked my grade yesterday lolol. I finally mustered up the courage to check since I’ll be returning to school in less than 2 weeks, so I kinda needed to know lol. At least I was able to enjoy break without worrying too much lol. I know…I’m weird but I’m just so glad that I never gave up and withdrew. I fought until the end, so now I can review Chem 1 material this week for fun and move onto Chem 2 this semester! Thank God I don’t have to shell out money for the same class again. Woohoo!

Congrats! Glad to hear it worked out.

That is great news, Nerdygirl1994. Remember all that worrying the next time you are worrying, and hopefully it will always turn out this successfully. Wooooooot.

Congratulations!
