Will I get in as a UCR transfer?

My major is sociology and my grades aren’t that good. My overall transfer gpa so far is 2.89. I got a D in Japanese and Intermediate Algebra, but re took both of them. Japanese is now a B and Intermediate Algebra is now a C. I was told they won’t consider Algebra since it isn’t transferable also. I was also told my major isn’t impacted there as much as the other UCs, but I’m not sure. So, will I get in?

It’s too early to tell since you still need a transferable math, such as Stats. Continue working hard to get your GPA up.

Yep. ^^^.
And yes, Int algebra is non-transferable. Remember you can take up to 14 units of courses P/NP. Not for major req but for others. Use it.

@lindyk What do you mean by the P/NP thing?

@NewSocio‌

Lindyk means you can take up to 14 units of Pass/No Pass or Credit/No Credit classes.

However, admissions really encourage you to take them with letter grades.

That’s not true. Maybe for math or some particular major, but I’ve never seen the UCs in general say don’t use them. I know someone who took 12 P/NP units and got into every UC she applied to, impacted major. The key is to pick the correct ones to use P/NP for, meaning those that really have no bearing even remotely on your major, or courses they don’t care about so much. Really. It is there to be used. Even the big kahuna, Haas undergrad, says you can take language req P/NP. (Not sure I’d do it, but I know some who got in doing it.)

But I will now reverse my stance and kind of agree with @virilux in this situation.

Thinking about it, you really need to up your game GPA-wise, so maintaining it with P/NP may not be a big help. It’s one thing for a 3.9 to take a P/NP, but a 2.89 could be interpreted as not being able to cut it. Your best position would be to try and get your GPA to around 3.2. Perhaps one P/NP in a totally non-major-related class like physical science.

I really saw no point in taking P/NP classes. I mean unless you’ve lost personal sovereignty about your academic potential, then I don’t know why people do take P/NP classes. If you have the chance to prove yourself great, take it.

In that one video of the UC counselor conference, the rep said taking the P/NP classes won’t affect their admission decision, but they do encourage you to have it with a letter grade. If you believe you can get an A and do achieve that, not only does that raise your GPA, but also makes you happy! Perhaps the evaluators too

I believe ppl can choose how they want to use that option, and it doesn’t mean they’ve lost “personal sovereignty”, although that’s your prerogative to believe that. My daughter took two P/NP last term, mainly because she didn’t want to stress. She didn’t slack, but just wanted a stress-free last semester with only two other classes for letter grades. It’s a personal choice. This sounds like a variation of the UCers who look down on transfers. I think all options can exist without one being seen as inferior.

That’s true as well! I forgot about stress alleviation. Perhaps I just got too boggled up in raising GPA. :frowning: But what you said is very true!

Just for the record, I’m also a big believer in Precalc being taken P/NP, as Calc 1 for a letter grade, negates any previous math course, and just makes life easier. I can tell you with 100% certainty Calc 1 and 2 for a letter grade is all the UCs will care about.

And I do understand your position, especially if you’re working on GPA.

Haha, I think I cheated with Calc. I took AP Calc during my Sophomore year in High School and then took Math 150/151 in my Junior year. It was nice to see other people struggle! It was also my first college class so I was shocked that it was only one semester and you get a totally different class the next. I also learned that there are classes that you don’t have to meet every single day!

In Assist it says you can take Math 151 (Calc 2) and Math 122 but only course will be given credit. Since I got a B in 151, I’m going to try my chances with this 122. Doesn’t hurt right?

Ok, I see. A glutton for punishment! >:)
