will I get in to UC Berkeley or NYU?

So I just got my SAT’s back and my math score is pretty high at a 710, but my reading and writing are fairly average at 560 and 570 respectively. My GPA is around a 3.5 or a 3.6, so nothing special, but I’ve taken 1 AP class my junior year and 4 this year. Do I have enough academically to get into these schools? Also, would a good college essay make a difference in getting in? Lastly, is it normal that my math SAT grade is so much higher than my reading and writing grades?

Berkeley will be tough. The average UW GPA was around 3.9 for both in and out-of-staters. Your SAT scores are also well below average. You only took one AP class in Jr. year so your UC Weighed GPA will be around 3.6 compared to an average of 4.3 at that school. Unless if you write some killer essays and have great ECs which might bring Berkeley to a reach, Berkeley be a high reach.

NYU is a reach for you at the moment as well. Apply to some other schools. SUNY, UCD are comparable to NYU and Berkeley respectively, to some extent.

Actually I just found out I have a 3.85 GPA… how do my chances look now?

NYU: Low reach actually in my opinion if you have good rec’s and have any hooks?
UC Berkeley: Reach-High Reach low SAT’s main reason
Good Luck!

Do you think my 710 in math will make a difference for UC Berkeley? And what do you mean by hooks? Like extra curriculars?
