Will I get into a Cal State?

I’ve lived in California my whole life until I had to move to Colorado in the middle of my second semester of my sophomore year. In California, my freshman year, I had a 2.8 and a 3.0.(Taking no honors only CP)In the first semester of my sophomore year, while i was still in California, I had a 3.8. So I moved to Colorado (due to family), and for the second semester of my sophomore year, I received a 2.8 including the only D on my transcript in Chemistry. I am now a junior and I passed my first semester with a 3.57 including taking APUSH and getting an A in it. My cumulative GPA is now at a 3.2 and I hope to raise it to a 3.33 by the end of my second semester. I’m moving back to California before I start my senior year and I was wondering if cal states (specifically cal state fullerton and cal poly) would be fine with the D considering I transferred schools mid semester with no grasp on what my new school taught. Also is there anything I can do to improve my chances? I will be an instate student in the San Bernandino area by the time I apply for college. (sorry if this is a bit sloppy I’m in a bit of a time crunch) Any information to help me get into a Cal State or calm my nerves about my GPA will help very much!

Did you plan to retake the Chemistry course to replace the D? If not, it will be included in your CSU GPA (10-11th grades for a-g courses). Intended major?

Which Cal Poly, Pomona or SLO? CSUF and both Cal Poly’s are impacted so your intended major can make a difference.

CSU’s admit by eligibility index and major so you need to calculate your CSU GPA and EI by end of Junior year. Also any a-g courses taken the summer before Senior will be included in your CSU GPA to help bump up your GPA?. What about test scores?

Repost with your CSU GPA, test scores, EI and major and posters can help you with a list of Cal states that would be suitable to apply.

First and foremost, be sure to complete the a-g course matrix with C or better. if you miss one required semester, you are out for all the CSUs. Colorado’s public colleges are much more flexible about having specific courses - so be sure to sign up for the right classes next year.

For most programs at Cal Poly SLO. you need a 4+ gpa and a strong SAT/ACT to be competitive - which sounds like will be a stretch for you.

Fullerton is probably accessible for most programs with a 3.3 GPA and 1200 SAT. If you don’t have a specific degree objective at this point, others to consider are Chico, Sac, Sonoma, SJSU and maybe Northridge. If you have a something specific in mind - say Marine Bio, or something Ag related, there would be others to consider.

My top colleges are Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona, and my desired major is Business/Entrepreneurship. I received one D after moving in the middle of a semester, would I really have to retake chemistry all over again or would colleges understand my situation? I also plan on taking on 2 more AP classes my senior year, would that be of any help? And I haven’t taken my SAT yet.

I suggest you retake Chemistry since it will be included in your CSU GPA if you do not. There is no where on the CSU application to explain your situation in changing schools other than you indicating your grades from each HS you attended. CSU’s are all about GPA and Test scores since essays, EC’s or LOR’s are not considered or required. Definitely apply to CSUSB as a safety since you get priority and see where you stand at the end of Junior year.

Definitely retake the Chemistry course. No, the state schools won’t give you special understanding because you moved. You need a C or better to qualify.

i agree - retake the semester of Chem if you can. Also, taking extra APs Sr year will not have a positive impact on your admission to a CSU. They are simply looking for you to have completed this list of courses.

For Biz, a 3.3 CSUGPA and 1200 SAT should also do the trick for CPP. I’d add that most of the CSUs have decent biz programs. I encourage you to broaden your search somewhat. The schools I’ve listed above are a good place to start.

Good luck.

As much as I dislike the San Bernardino area around campus, they have a fantastic business program. It would save you a ton of cash if you commute.
