Will I get into college in Florida with no honors classes freshman year

I’m an incoming high school freshman and I have no honors classes even though my high school offers them. I was trying to get honors English which I thought I would due to the fact I scored above average on my entrance exam and always have good grades in reading and language (think 86% or higher.)but last quarter I ended up with a 73% in language due to a project. I’ve never got a bad grade in reading and language but I was told there was no way for me to get into the class now. I’m super worried because my mom told me I will have problems getting into schools I like such as UCF and FSU. I’m really worried that one project ruined it all for me is it true?

Added context
The project brought my grade down from an 86 to a 73 due to late points being put on despite my problems submitting being communicated through email and in person. I was told that I wouldn’t have late points because she saw my difficulties submitting and I had to redo it all. My teacher offered that if I got above 90% she would write a letter of recommendation to the school saying she believes I could handle the class.

You’re an incoming HS Freshman? But you say you have no Honors classes.

I’m confused - are you in 8th or 9th grade - or does HS for you start in 10th?

Take the most rigorous schedule you’re comfortable with, that you can handle.

You can’t point to colleges per se.

You have to be the best student that you can be - and then you’ll fit into an in state college.

But you should focus on you - not a school. Once you see where you stand in a few years, then you can figure out which schools will work for you.

Good luck.

deep breaths. assuming you are a FL resident, there are many good options. And middle school grades wont matter.

I think the OP means that they have no honors classes on their schedule for next year.

Agreed.

I think the reason they are talking about current year (middle school) grades is that the grades were the reason they weren’t placed into honors classes.

OP, please don’t worry. You are just starting high school; you have plenty of time to build a strong high school record. As @jym626 says, there are many good options in FL for you.

And an opportunity to demonstrate an upward trend!

Have your parent go to the school to request an override to.place you into the honors that you feel are appropriate for you.

One daughter had a slightly unusual type of upward trend. Her grades stayed the same through 4 years of high school. The rigor of her classes was what had the strong upward trend. She did fine in university admissions.

The same thing seems to apply as a possible option for the OP in this thread.

@Ashley_m17 Focus on doing well in your classes in high school. Pay attention in class. Keep ahead in your homework. Keep track of what work you need to get done (a list might help).

Having no honors classes freshman year is fine.

Usually if your parent signs a form (idk what exactly the form is called), you can still be put in honors classes. Maybe ask your guidance counselor about this.

I would ask your Mom to fight to get you into honors English. I don’t think you will not get into college over it but I worry that they will try to keep you in a no honors path and it can hurt in the long run. Have your Mom demand it with the guidance counselor and then the principal. Good luck.

You can control how hard you work in each class. Do your best & you should be fine. Try for honors next year.
