I applied and was accepted off the waitlist into the College of Letters and Science (pre-economics) at UC Berkeley on June 27th.
I SIRed on June 29th because the deadline to reply was July 1st. Due to the UC policy that you cannot SIR to multiple UC campuses, I declined my previously accepted SIR at UCI (business administration).
Same day, I received an email from my admissions and records counselor that I am missing my art credit and cannot submit a complete IGETC as the course I did take (a history of film class at another community college) was only CSU transferrable. According to Assist.org I can complete the IGETC or the L&S Essential Skills and breadth classes. The art class counts for L&S ES, which, based on Assist.org’s information I’ve completed, but the Transfer FAQ page says that IGETC must be completed in full so I’m confused about what’s acceptable or not. I emailed my admissions counselor and explained the situation and he said that by the looks of things, I should be fine, but that he would have to confirm with the College of Letters and Sciences.
Additionally, one of the courses I originally planned on taking at my CC (quarter system and calendar is way off from UCB) was not offered anymore at the school or any of the 3 CCs I checked and I recently submitted an updated form informing the school of this. However the class was taken to satisfy the requirements of a different school, and while UC transferrable, is only an elective course as the areas it would satisfy have already been satisfied by other courses that I’ve taken in the past.
I’m extremely scared that I will get rescinded due to the dropped class and the art credit. I was accepted super late in the game (Cal starts on August 13) and was not able to inform the University earlier, but it’s 4th of July weekend and all of the deadlines for paperwork and housing are coming up so if I don’t receive a response I’m screwed. Especially because it is so past the SIR deadline at UCI (even though I only changed my decision on Friday) and I don’t know if they’ll give me my spot back at UCI. I’m going to call both schools first thing tomorrow to see if UCI can give me a spot back or UCB will allow me to retain admission, but I am so scared right now I can barely eat. Worst case scenario is that I go to CC for another year but this would honestly disappoint me and my parents so much, especially because they didn’t want me to go to CC in the first place.
What are my chances of getting my spot back at UCI? UCB?
I didn’t read all of this but Berkeley’s L&S requires full IGECT. People have gotten rescinded. You need to reach out to berkeley ASAP, explain that you did not get the email until after you withdrew from UCI and pray to God they’ll let you take in summer.
Also email them so you make sure it’s documented correctly and not someone relating the story to a committee and leaving parts out.
Keep in mind Berkeley L&S will want to see the CCC sign-off on full IGETC, so the advisor saying oh it’s fine, whatever, and yet they aren’t signing off, is misguided.
@Ohm888 I’ve been emailing my admissions counselor since Monday but he hasn’t gotten back. For the art credit he said I should be fine but I later emailed him again regarding the dropped sociology class and how it wasn’t offered at any of the CCs in my area and that it was taken as a requirement for another college I applied to. In case you didn’t get to this part, I finished all the L&S Essential Skills and Breadth classes even without the sociology class and assist.org said you can finish IGETC or ^^. Do you have any idea if UCI will give me my spot back? I changed my SIR status last Friday and all other forms have been submitted for that college.
I have no idea re course that wasn’t offered, although i assume it will be fine. You might want to contact UCI. Did the CCC advisor make you think the art class fulfilled IGETC? If so, that could help, I assume. You really need to let them know it was a mix up and you’ll do it in summer.
And what do you mean by L&S essential? Do you mean breadth? If so and those are all complete, they might be OK, even though you told them IGETC in the application. But not every IGETC course matches breadth and you can’t mix and match. So you should check that you have all the breadth courses they want.
For instance, if it’s foothill, look under eligibility areas to see the courses for each section that are accepted. (Im not sure what CCC you’re at.)

@Ohm888 I’ve checked Assist’s breadth requirements according to each school that I took classes at (Ohlone is where I took the art class and De Anza and Foothill, which are sister schools that share the same portals, are where I took the rest). The advisor made no particular mention to IGETC, his exact words were “I will need to check eligibility in the morning with your college. By the looks of things you should be fine. I will confirm tomorrow.” This was in regards to the art class.
The sociology class was one that I was taking for a USC requirement and I emailed him later to inform him that the course wasn’t offered at any of the three colleges I attended. The requirements it was eligible to fill on the Breadth have already been filled by courses I’ve already taken and gotten credit for.
This is the Assist page that says I can complete L&S requirement in Reading Comp, Foreign Language, and Quantitative Reasoning (Essential Skills) OR IGETC:
This is the Assist page that indicates Essential Skills and Breadth requirements for De Anza:
L&S has a seven course breadth path if you don’t choose IGETC. You should look through the list I sent above using your CCC and see how many of those 7 you have fulfilled. The essential skills (English and math) are pretty basic and don’t make you especially competitive.
L&S is under the assumption you completed IGETC as noted in the app and full IGETC is required if you choose that path. The more breadth you have completed the better. How they analyze breadth, I have no idea. I might add I’m not clear if you completed the 7-course breadth as you keep reverting to essential skills.
Anyway no point in going over this since it is now in the hands of Berkeley. I have seen rescinds when IGETC in L&S is not complete and econ is highly selective so I hope you have a better outcome. As i noted, the more the mix-up can be tied to an advisor, the better.
