Will I Receive Double Credit for AP and its Equivalent Course

Hi everyone!

Here are my AP scores:

Biology (5)
Chemistry (1)
Environmental Science (4)
Physics 1 (probably 4, will take next year)
English Language (4)
Art History (4)
Statistics (4)
Calculus ab (3)
Psychology (4)
Human Geography (4)
Macroeconomics (probably 5, will take next year)
United States History (5)
United States Government (probably 5, will take next year)
English Literature (4)

Anyway, I’ll be taking similar courses at SBCC. Will I be receiving double credit? Some of the classes are “course equivalents” to my APs. I couldn’t find this information online.

The reason why I’m repeating the courses is for an easy A+, so I can easily adjust to my freshman year, and to reinforce some knowledge, as I’m planning in majoring in Political Science and minoring in Marine Biology/Biology at UCLA, UC Berkeley, or something along those lines.

By the way, my SAT is a 2120, if that puts me into perspective. I’m going to SBCC to save money, and because it’s an easier route to UCLA/Berkeley than by starting off at UCSB.

Since, with my APs, I’ll start college with 32.1 UC credits, I could TAG into Davis and skip sophomore year entirely.

Semester 1 (16.8)
4-American Government and Politics (AP US Govt.)
1-Discussion: American Government and Politics
3-International Politics
3-Political Thinking (AP US Govt/APUSH)
4-Marine Biology (AP Biology)
1.8-Skin and Scuba Diving

Semester 2 (17.8)
3-Modern Europe
4-Conceptual Physics, Honors (AP Physics 1)
3-Argumentation and Debate
5-Elementary Statistics, Honors (AP Statistics)
3-American Literature, Honors (AP Literature)

AP US Govt. gives me 2.7 credits, and the two part course gives me 5. Can I still report the AP and take the class and get 7.7 credits?

Same with AP Physics 1, Statistics, and Literature, but different credit counts.

UC policy is to grant credit units only once when you have courses and/or AP credit that substantially duplicate material covered.

In general, it is not worthwhile to repeat your AP credit unless you need to fulfill a requirement where using AP credit is not allowed (e.g. major requirements for the political science major at Berkeley – see http://www.assist.org or the major departments at your target schools to check). The other possible reason to repeat your AP credit is if the course to be skipped is a key prerequisite for other courses, and trying the final exams for the college course indicates that your knowledge of the material is weaker than the college course expects.

If you intend to major in any kind of biology, you probably need to take general chemistry (a 1 score on the AP test means that you are not getting credit even if the school may allow it), organic chemistry, and general biology (though some schools may allow AP biology credit for this). Physics for biology majors is also typically required. Check http://www.assist.org .

So, should I not report AP US Govt, AP Stat, or AP Lit?

Because I wouldn’t be getting credit while taking it at a CC?

You can report it, but don’t expect double credit if you take a duplicating course (although it is possible that some of your courses may not actually be duplicating – for example, AP biology is generally seen as a duplicate of general biology, not a somewhat specialized course like marine biology).

I need 30 credits before applying for TAG. I’m planning to do it all with AP credits to skip Sophomore Year/Freshman Year. Should I report the classes that I’m repeating (not Bio)?

Should I just not take US Govt? Statistics? Physics? And instead, take Comparative, Calc II, and Physics II?
I’m better with writing and history than I am with the math sans sciences but by no means am I bad at them.

I’m planning on minoring in Biology. Would replacing mentioned courses with their advanced versions help me?

Btw, thank you so much, @ucbalumnus‌ . You’ve helped me a great deal on CC!

You need to decide. If you want the credits from AP, don’t retake the course. If you retake the course because you think it will be an easy A, then you don’t get the high school credit for it. Most people retake the courses in their major and use the APs for things they aren’t going to take in college.

You would not get double credit, however, you will get a real grade to be counted in your GPA when you retake the course. Some students do that to refresh their memory before taking the next level class, some just want to get a good GPA for merit aid or other purposes. Most students would not retake the courses for the credits already under their belts.

You need to go through http://www.assist.org and the web sites of your target majors/schools to check requirements and whether AP credit is accepted for any requirements. Then you can decide whether you have to retake the course (for requirements) or can skip it (though trying old final exams for it can help you with the decision to skip it or not).

In any case, plan your course work so that you will make the 60 semester units by transfer time without needing any AP credit that could be potentially duplicated with your college courses.
