Will I still qualify for reduced tuition? (Tuition Incentive Program)

Hi there, I’m a senior and am planning on going to an out-of-state school that offers a Tuition Incentive Program, which reduces tuition to about half the out-of-state tuition. The county in Illinois that my family and I have lived in for the past two years definitely qualifies for that, and the FAFSA we filed is in said county. HOWEVER, my parents are planning on moving to Michigan this summer before I go to college, and the state does not qualify for TIP. I know I will get the reduced rate for my freshman year, but what about the other years? Is there anything I can do to keep this rate for the rest of my undergraduate education? We were thinking that we could use our family friend’s address that lives in the county…would that work? Thank you so much for your help!

I think you need to check with the college. You need to find out if you will qualify for instate tuition after the first year. Your parents are moving to a state that does NOT participate on this program.

You cannot use a family friend’s address as your permanent address. YOUR address for tuition purposes is where your PARENTS reside. It is considered fraud to obtain federally funded aid using fraudulent information (using a friends address is not honest). I’m going to guess that the state of Illinois frowns in dishonestly for their state tuition programs as well.

Your best bet throughout this process is to be HONEST.

If you read residency requirements, you will see that the DOMICILE of the PARENTS determines residency in the vast majority of cases for undergrads.
