For one of my essays, I have to answer “Why University A?” (A being one of the universities that I’m applying to, which won’t matter in this case, so I don’t want to mention it)
I want to include a brief snippet that says something along the lines of:
Can I mention something like this? As the title states, will it sound like I’m dissing other peer applicants? I really want to highlight why I should attend University A, but I primarily want to show how committed and dedicated I am for applying…
Does anyone have suggestions as to how to make it sound better? Maybe change up the wording to make it sound not as “rude” if it is already?
I agree it’s a bad idea. They want to know why YOU are interested in their institution, and any speculation about other applicants’ interest is just that, speculation. Also, adcoms know you are applying to other schools and saying, “but I really, really, really want to go to your school, you’re my top choice” is not likely to be seen as meaningful anyway. How would they know that is true just by you saying so? Show that you have done your research by citing specific reasons (classes, professors, research interests, etc.) that are unique to that school and why you would be a valuable member of the college community.
Don’t mention other schools. It’s like the idea of glass half full and glass half empty. Everyone knows the glass has water! Do NOT mention other schools (or applicants) in your why _____ university essay.
