Sally, I just wanted to let you know how much I love reading your posts! They are always spot on and quite professional. You have a lot of helpful insights. I often use your advice for my own students and many of them are Latino.

You are one of the people that is helping to level the playing field. Thank you.

Thanks so much, mtnmomma. You made my day. One of the goals of CC is to take a few bumps out of that proverbial playing field by providing free college-admissions information. When CC was founded nearly a decade ago, many of the early posters and lurkers were Ivy angsters from well-heeled households. But now we draw a huge range of students, parents, educators, etc. with diverse backgrounds and goals. I am grateful to all of the CC members who share their time and knowledge with others. Some of the best advice on CC comes not only from ringers (admission and guidance counselors, teachers, deans, etc.) but also from the rank and file … those who have survived this maze themselves (or are in the throes of doing so) and are willing to pass along what they’ve learned.

I wish I could personally answer everyone who writes to Ask The Dean, but that’s no longer possible. So my “triage” system includes giving some priority to those who may not have access to counseling elsewhere. (I also tend to favor queries that include something like “Thanks so much in advance” or “I really appreciate your help,” rather that the ones that start with “Yo” or “Okay.” )

I do hope that those who don’t receive a response from “The Dean” will post their questions on the CC discussion forum where they are likely to find the help or reassurance they need.
