Will Maryland take a chance with me?

I have a 3.8 UW GPA, 1540 SAT (1570 superscored. The only score they received though was my first SAT score, a 1430), good EC’s, lots of awards and honors, great letters of recommendation, I am an URM, a male, and a PA resident. I know that I am a very weak applicant amongst a highly talented and academically superior applicant pool. Do you think an adcom will take a chance and admit me? I applied as an economics major with a pre-med track. I hope they can take a chance with me and admit me, or else I will be severely crestfallen because Maryland, along with Penn State (which I’ve been accepted into), is my top-choice college.

A 1430 M+CR+W or M+Cr?

@jtoshni M+CR

FutureDoctor31, I’ve noticed you have posted previous requests for opinions on your “chance.” Relax. You got accepted into Penn State - congratulations! I know it’s easy to dismiss admission to your resident state school, but really, that is something that should take a lot of pressure off of you because Penn State is an excellent school.

In six weeks, you will have your answer about Maryland. Please do not dismiss your academic accomplishments (a 3.8 UW GPA is outstanding). If the 1430 is just M + CR, you should be fine! Hang in there.

My bad everyone! I meant that the 1430 was out of all three sections. My M+CR score that I was forced to send to Maryland was a 920 :’(. If I had a M+CR score of 1430, I wouldn’t be worrying right now haha

Same exact situation with me! My SAT scores are AWFUL but I am at the top of my class. I worked my butt off on my essays so they were very personable but my guidance counselor (who is a complete idiot btw) told me that b/c Maryland is such a big school sometimes they don’t read the essays and just play a number game! Good Luck!!!

^ There are just too many applications to read them all. Almost all large universities use software to determine the baseline numbers of the entire application pool then they only read applications with stats above that number.

@Pluma
That’s awful. They should just post minimum stats requirements. I guess they just want more money.

@Names I’m pretty sure UMD’s stuff will scrutinize your essays and find them to be very well written! If Maryland’s review is as holistic as they say it is on their website, then I’m pretty sure that they read essays very carefully. Good luck to you as well!
