Will my A+ in Latin cover my C+ in Calculus BC AP DC?

<p>I want to major in classics and am applying to some top notch schools. My math grades have all been A’s in the past, so I’m not bad a math, per se. It’s not like I didn’t try!</p>

<p>I was on the 1st place team at a national Latin competition, and I’ve won a lot of classics awards ranging from Greek Derivatives to Greek Mythology. I’ve won gold medals on two National Latin Exams. Classics is my forte!</p>

<p>So what are my chances, based on these facts alone, at getting into a place like Dartmouth, or any school of that caliber?</p>

<p>College admissions is too arbitrary to simply say that yes, this grade will cover that grade. However, colleges realize that no kid is perfect at everything, and thus will tend to see you for your strengths and what you want to study.</p>

<p>What Latin is this? Literature? Vergil? Or just plain honors?
It probably wont kill you unless you apply to an ivy.</p>

<p>@ Circular: My school really limits the classes it offers, so the highest I can go is Latin III H. But the successes I’ve had at competitions should speak for themselves</p>

<p>Reviews are holistic: one grade doesn’t “cover” another, nor will a single grade kill your chances. Nonetheless, C’s significantly hurt one’s chances for top schools.</p>

<p>I’m a junior and will apply to the typical top schools. I’m keeping an open mind at the moment, and I’ll establish my top choice only after I see my acceptances.</p>

<p>you should be fine. no one grade “covers” another by any means, but one grade definitely doesn’t make or break your application. In fact, if you do get interviewed, don’t be afraid to mention your C+ grade and explain its occurence (be sure it doesn’t sound too whiny or as if you are making excuses). Additionally, if you’ve gotten A’s in the past in Math, then one grade over the course of one semester (if that) is not nearly indicative of your capabilities as a math student. Colleges recognize this, and if they’re really interested in you as an applicant, they may even call your counselor for an explanation as to the anomaly (a call which, once again, is a positive since it may give you a chance to explain your grade).
