Will my admission get revoked?

I got admitted into Hotchkiss but was recently was caught cheating on a homework assignment and my school takes cheating really seriously, no matter how small the assignment. They said they may notify Hotchkiss. Will my admission get revoked if Hotchkiss hears about it?

Well, it most likely depends on the severity of the cheating. Also, top boarding schools usually change their decisions if accepted students’ grades begin to drop beyond an acceptable level, or if they receive a disciplinary notice for a major violation of a rule. Cheating on a homework assignment is not too bad, given that it’s not even a test. Still, as Hotchkiss is one of the best boarding schools in the US, there is a decent chance for your acceptance to be revoked. Maybe you can try to appeal to your school and send your teacher an email about how this was a mistake that will never be repeated. That is of course, in the case in which you’re very desperate. Sorry about your situation, hope it goes well!

All boarding schools take cheating really seriously, too (read the student handbook). It’s a serious offense, “no matter how small the assignment.” If your school notifies Hotchkiss, your admission may, indeed, be in jeopardy. The biggest issue right now is how you will respond. These schools place great emphasis on character and integrity. Cheating does not speak well to either of those, so you need to be prepared to admit your mistake and explain why it will never happen again. The problem with that, though, is that no matter what you say or how you say it, your action has indicated that you may not be trustworthy. All you can do is show true penitence and be prepared to take any consequences. Good luck.

Hotchkiss is also a single strike school if that makes a difference. I agree the response needs to be quick and well prepared.

Hotchkiss is not single-strike for academic integrity. There is a three-step list of consequences for breaking the academic honor code. From the Hotchkiss Almanac 2017-2018:

This problem this student has is that s/he has incurred a first-strike before ever setting foot on campus. Hopefully, this is a first and only offense that will never recur, and the OP can move forward having learned an important lesson earlier rather than later.

Cheating on a homework assignment ? Does that mean plagiarism ? Or was it that you received some type of unauthorized or forbidden assistance ?

Do you go to a public or private school now? If public, hopefully the school won’t want to make waves for you. They don’t want a law suit. Just try to learn from it but do find out if they intend to inform Hotchkiss so you can stay ahead of the problem. I’d try to get help from a consultant asap.
