My daughter goes to a very small public school in New England (classes of around 16). Since freshman year, she has taken online classes, with an emphasis on politics and government. She’s a junior and has taken (the equivalent of) four years of language, math, and science. She took an online civics course in 9th grade. In 10th grade, she took American Government Honors, as well as AP US Gov & Politics and English Two (all online). In the summer of her sophomore year, she took a college-level American Political Theory class, in which she got a B+ as well as a Critical Reading and Writing class (her grade was an A). This year, her junior year, she is taking two APs online: AP Human Geography and AP World History. She is also taking an honors English Three course online. The problem is that she had pneumonia in the first quarter, making her fall behind. This has caused her two APs to drop to 85 (AP HUG) and 79 (AP WH). Her English class is still fine, with a 93. In all her other courses, she seems to be getting mostly A’s. In addition to this, she’s the on the School and Public Library boards. She’s logged 200+ hours of community service and is the Varsity Soccer Captain. Any advice to try to make those two AP grades look better?? (She has not taken the SAT yet). I’m just looking for some clarity.
Her guidance counselor can make mention that her grades in those two AP classes took a hit due to pneumonia. That way your daughter doesn’t have to bring it up.
By the way, she should also check out American University and, if it’s not too conservative for her, Catholic U. Both in DC and somewhat less selective. (More selective is, of course, Georgetown which could also be worth a shot depending on her final GPA and test scores.) DC is great place to be a student - internship central, of course. Decent weather year round and lots of fun free things to do.
My son actually liked American better than either GW or Georgetown.
