Will my kid have trouble getting in?

D is a senior, interested in art as a major. She is not particularly fond of studio-intensive programs. Her SAT scores are not great, but GPA is 92. Is she going to have trouble getting into an art major program at a public school?

May depend on the school.

If she’s not fond of long studio hours, she might be better looking into schools that offer BAs (generally 1/3 studio art, 2/3 liberals) vs BFAs (2/3 of your credits are studio art courses).

Any idea if schools weigh the portfolio heavier than SAT scores?

The quality of the portfolio is always more important than SAT score for arts schools.

Are you looking at public schools because you perceive that they are less expensive? That may only be true for your in-state public’s (but there are exceptions). What state are you in?

We’re in NY. Leaning toward state schools because we can afford it without going into debt.

What kind of art is she interested in? I’m a NYer and have visited a couple of them, kids peers have attended etc. Alfred, New Paltz, Purchase, FIT, SUNY Albany all have well respected programs - altho note that I’m more familiar with the BFA programs since my kids wanted more studio intensive classes. In addition there’s other SUNYs with art majors depending on what your D is interested in.

See here for a good breakdown of what’s offered: https://www.suny.edu/media/suny/content-assets/documents/guides-to-majors/career_cluster_Arts.pdf

With high grades and GPA, your D may qualify for SUNY presidential scholarships, honors level classes etc which ARE grade/test score based.

One note though, unless you qualify for NYS Excelsior Scholarship, you may still find that private schools can offer a lot of aid to make them competitive price wise.
