Will Not graduate Highschool and am 17

I am currently 17 and am enrolled in my california High school; but I will not graduate because I am missing one class worth 5 credits. I enrolled to take classes in my local community college prior to being informed that I was unable for graduation, I will be starting in june 2017. Now I am scared and do not know if the College will accept me with a highschool diploma and being 17 years old. I have researches I can attend community college in california without a diploma as long as I am 18 but I am still 17 by the time classes start. Only by 16 days my birth day is june 16; Thankyou for your help

Are you a HS Senior? Have you committed to a college already?

Yes I am a senior and have already submitted paperwork for enrolment in a california community college; I will not be graduating high school

I am 17 years old and will not be 18 until 16 days after classes start, I have heard and researched that I can start community college without high school only if you are an adult 18 years and older ? Can I still attend without graduating and being 17 ?

Did you talk to your GC to see if you can do the missing class online or this summer?

Will you be able to get financial aid for college without a high school diploma?

If you take the missing course this summer, see if that makes you an August hs graduate or your hs or district will certify you completed everything and are just waiting for the paper. Talk to the GC and the comm college.

Take the class this summer. You will have to produce the diploma for certain jobs even if you have a four year degree. I know I did. There is no guarantee that you will complete CC and get a degree so you need at the H.S. paper. Besides I don’t think you can use Pell or some other financial aid for college in the summer. A community college will still welcome you in a few months.

you need to find a way to graduate… i am certain your district has summer classes and alternative schools with on-line versions of the class for just this purpose. This isn’t something you should take lightly, seriously, the GED is not an equivalent and you will be hindered in ways you can’t understand without a HS diploma. Your HS CG should be able to help you through this. Don’t worry about the CC, until you have this buttoned down - they can wait.
good luck.

What class do you still need to take?

My son was 16 and our local CC has a program for HS students to take up to 6 semester units during the summer but they are low priority for enrollment. The HS counselor had to sign a permission form from the CC. A school district rep can also sign.

Another option here in Orange County is an online high school program where you can make up or work ahead.

Also check local private high schools that allow outside students to enroll for the summer.

For any of the above, the completed courses should be able to be added onto your transcripts to meet your diploma requirements.

One last option for a high school equivalent diploma is the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) but you won’t get results until mid July. http://chspe.net

Good luck!

You are one class away from getting a high school diploma! Please talk to someone at your high school to help you get this class and be able to graduate from high school.
